This is gonna be good!

Ken Block Jumps His Rally Car on Discovery Channel's 'Stunt Junkies',
Monday Feb 12th @ 10pm EST

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block will star in an upcoming
episode of the Discovery Channel show 'Stunt Junkies'. In the episode,
which premiers Monday, February 12th at 10pm EST, Ken Block attempts to jump his
Monster Energy Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car farther than any other
rally car in history. 'Stunt Junkies' is a Discovery Channel series
which profiles the world's best action sports athletes as they
conceptualize, design, build and execute a mind blowing stunt. Block's
high flying antics were attempted using a motocross style dirt jump
with a huge gap and landing ramp . After its premier Monday, Feb 12th
at 10pm EST, the show will re-air Feb 13th at 2am EST and again Feb
16th at 11pm EST.

Grainy cell phone video footage has been leaked across the internet
already, and photos of the car flying through the air for the stunt
have been labeled as fakes. But on Feb 12th at 10pm EST viewers will
witness what really happened to both the car and Block upon landing.
"I wanted to take a street legal competition rally car and treat it
like a motocross bike, attempting to jump as far as possible without
destroying the car or hurting myself, I wanted to just drive away."
explains Block. "My final attempt at the jump was much higher and
farther than I ever imagined!"

Block's vision led to the construction of a huge dirt-to-dirt jump,
built over the course of several days at the Lake Elsinore Motocross
park in Southern California. The jump was filmed by dozens of cameras
both in the car and on the ground by the 'Stunt Junkies' crew. As a
professional rally driver competing for Subaru Rally Team USA, Block
naturally wanted to use one of his competition rally cars for the
jump. A Vermont SportsCar prepared 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally
car was transported to Southern California for the stunt. The rally
car was last used by Block to earn 'Rookie of the Year' honors in the
2005 Rally America National Championship and features a competition
roll cage, gravel rally suspension and underbody protection.

Ken Block's newly launched personal website, www.ken-block.com now
features two exclusive hi-res wallpaper photos from the stunt.
Immediately following the first airing of the episode the web site
will feature a large hi-resolution image gallery from the stunt as
well as a video clip. Block's new website also features exclusive rally
videos and photos from Block's impressive 2006 season of rallying
where finished 2nd Overall in the Rally America National Championship
and won the Bronze Medal in the inaugural X Games Rally.

I just watched the show and beside the stunt itself (which is pretty sick) it shows images from other US events as well as the Xgames rally, representing our sport in a VERY spectacular way.
If we can have these kind of well produced shows (together with Xgames, the ESPN RA shows, Import Racers etc.) to showcase rally on major TV channels, even just a handful of times every year, then Rally can be in for a VERY successful future in North America!
I had "non-motorsport people" watching it with me at my office and they were literally glued to the screen, truly entertained.

Thanks for the feedback, corrections (fixed the STPR one already), and compliments on the site.

I will try and update it with new photos and videos often.

The Stunt Junkies episode is pretty good...some cheesy TV stuff in it, but overall it’s good and it represents rally fairly well. Hope you enjoy it.

There will be a video clip, photo gallery and one more wallpaper added to my site tomorrow morning from the jump (legally, we have to wait till after the show airs to post this stuff).

" The Ouninpohja stage is famous for a huge jump located 6km from the start line, close to a landmark yellow house. Spectators measure the length of each jump and mark the distance with stakes by the roadside. Markko Martin holds the record for the longest jump. In 2003 he travelled 57 metres in the air at a speed of 171kph
The highest average speed recorded through Ouninpohja in 2003 was 129kph. The highest actual speed recorded by a Subaru team car was 198kph.

Ken, props to you!
I hope your back is OK...

I know what that n00b is saying about it not being an official longest jump, but it's the longest in America for sure. The whole program came off very well IMHO in promoting rally in the states. It was the best stunt junkies I've seen because they got a little more involved with the car and giving that short dude a ride. Hopefully this will give rally enough publicity to maybe get some more airtime over here. Either way, great job Ken, and a great looking family you have there. :) I also enjoyed them showing the actual calculations that you did. IE you on the ramp checking with an inclonometer (sp?)... Maybe it's just that subaru's are something I'm more into, but I love the whole 30 minutes of that show where as I usually can't stand the first 15 minutes of a typical episode.

I tivoed it, and it won't be getting deleted anytime soon...

So Marko want 187 feet in distance - BUT he was only at a maximum height of about 10 feet. On a jump in a stage that has been used for decades.

Ken went 171 feet with a height of about 50 feet. To me that is takes as much if not MORE skill and guts.

My 2¢

Congratulations Ken!

Sir-Knight
02-13-2007, 01:51 PM
where the heck are you measuring the height from? The only reason block's jump was so 'high' was because they made a RAMP with a giant cutout. If that were a real rally stage, there would be ROAD there, and if you measured from the lowest point of where the crest starts, you would have an accurate representation of how high marrko's jump was. If you continued the crest so that it emulated a road, block would only be about 10-12 feet off the "ground" as well.

It's a specatcular jump for sure, but it's made more than what it is simply by the fact that it was staged and set up to look so.

Do the math: 180ft at 171kph (106mph) or 174ft at maybe 70mph. Of course Ken's jump is going to be a lot higher. Also keep in mind he almost missed the landing ramp completely, so he dropped from pretty high up.

We get your point. The "record" of the jump was misrepresented in the show. Blame that on Stunt Junkies, hell, you could even send them a polite letter telling them of their mistake (people make mistakes... even Discovery Channel). Ken's jump is still pretty damn spectacular.

It was cool but skill of driving was NOT something that that stunt was about. It was about planning, preparation and guts. He accelerated to just over 60 MPH and then went for a ride. Ken has serious driving skills but they weren't really being utilized for the stunt.

No see what you do is you sell your company and then you stay hired as a very powerful exec within the brand. So you get millions from then sale, then a hefty salary and the ability to make your own hours and do mostly what you want.

Unless the 187ft jump was recorded officially, it's not a "World Record" and you'll note that the Subaru site you're quoting (http://www.subaru-msm.com/global/feature/letterSWRT/45.html) was very careful not to call it an 'official world record' but 'holds the record'.

"The record" ... aka, the record as recorded by drunken rally Fins... doesn't count ;)

Compairing a open class car to a almost a 1 million dollar wrc car isn't really fair.... Kens suspension points are pretty much the same as the stock car.
Sure it is (fair).

If someone wants to spend $5million on a car to jump an extra 1 foot to make a new record, who the hell cares?

And if you land just right, your suspension points are 95% irrelevant.

Anyway...

Congrats Ken.

Yes, DC Shoes is now part of the Quiksilver family of brands - Quiksilver, Roxy, DC Shoes, Dynastar, Rossignol, Lange, Look, etc. Ken is now Chief Brand Officer and retains much control of the brand management and design.

You forgot Lib Tech and Gnu snowboards.

Go Banana Technology!:D

It feels great to be able to say, "I have one of those. I might not be able to do that, but I have a Subaru!"

I want to know what flew off the car when he landed. It actually landed pretty level, just a little hard. I bet the car isn't quite straight anymore

I just hope all this stuff gets some money into Rally. Then again when the money shows up it will go to a handful of teams and make it even harder for others to compete. Such is life.

Who up for some yumps?

I watched the airing and was impressed with the huge ramp-to-ramp jump. I was also impressed how intelligent Ken was in the interview segments. I've never met the man and will probably never wear the shoes but I was none the less impressed. (Perhaps I was expecting a skater or gangsta stereo-type.) The hosts were a bit hyper but the show was interesting to watch. I might have liked to have seen the formulas used and more about the car setup. Overall all though, I thought it was a good showing in support for Rally in the US.

Are Rally America cars set up like P-WRC's?

Fog light covers.
Like lemmings - they "leap" off cars at every opportunity.

I skated for nine years
been snowboarding for nine
downhill mountain biking for a while

yet, all the episodes related to those sports were completely boring. Block blew those episodes out of the water!

Well the man did start a business and be able to grow it into a very large and successful brand...

And yes. Rally-America cars are very similiar to PWRCars. Most of the cars are PWRC cars with more power modifications and some weight reduction plus the odd modification.

Nope, Mervin got bought out a few years ago.
A testiment to Quiksilver is that the haven't "messed" with the companies themselves - Mike Olsen is still in charge of R&D (as he should be) at Mervin and Ken is still in chagre of the Brand Identity (as he should be as well).
I was really nervous when the buyouts occured, as I have been a Mervin and DC dealer since day one of both companies - as well as Quik - but it has all gone well.
And now Ken is Famous!

It has been such a good year - I will be able to fix my car and rally this season.:D

Ok, I am baffled... I tried to do the math on this and things just didn't work out. How could Ken go so fast in his car and fly so damn far when it is weighed down by the size of his sack of steel!? Holy crap that was an awesome jump. Sorry I am so late on this, I know it is now old news. I just didn't know about it till I got this months issue of Subiesport. DAMN!!!! Ken, you kick serious @$$.
