The HANS Head and Neck Restraint Device Install
Photos and Text by: Drew Brashler (yesitsdrew5310)

Disclaimer: Modification of your helmet involves risks and may void your warranty, cause malfunctions or damage to the safety gear. I can not be held responsible for the modifications you consciously decide to undertake nor for the results of doing so.

Note: This modification was made to a Pyrotect Pro Airflow SA Series Open Face, other helmets installations may differ slightly.

Alrighty, well I ordered the HANS Device in the Model 20 Medium from Paul from http://www.get-primitive.com/. I thought the install PDF that was included was very confusing. Since Rally America is requiring a SFI 38.1 Head and Neck Restraint Device in 2008, I figured that this would help some people install their HANS.

NOTE: This write-up is only a guide; make sure you follow the instructions included with your HANS for installation.

Tools Needed:
- Any Snell, SFI, FIA 8858-2002 or FIA 8860-2004 approved racing helmet
- HANS Device
- HANS Helmet Anchor Kit
- 11mm Wrench or Socket
- A Drill with Sharp Bits from 1/32 inch to 1/4 inch
- Thin Tip Sharpie
- Masking Tape or Gaffers Tape
- Flexible Ruler or Tape Measure
- A piece of string

Here is a photo of what comes with the HANS Device:

Step 1 – Taping The Helmet:
Take some masking tape and tape three pieces out on the helmet like shown in these photos:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/Yesitsdrew5310/Subaru%20Stuff/DIY%20HANS%20Install/_DSC6628.jpg

Step 2 – Marking The Vertical Center Point:
Draw a vertical line guessing where you think the vertical center is on the back of the helmet. Use a piece of string to measure from the chin strap attachments to the back to help find a correct center point.

Next draw a horizontal line 1 ½ inches from the top of the molding to mark the center point in the back of the helmet.

Step 3 – Marking The Horizontal Line:
Next take your ruler and draw a line 1 ½ inch above the molding around the helmet.

Step 4 – Marking The Post Anchor Points:
Measure 6 inches from the vertical center point in the back and line that up with the horizontal line. Your mark should look like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/Yesitsdrew5310/Subaru%20Stuff/DIY%20HANS%20Install/_DSC6640.jpg

Step 5 – Drilling The Post Anchor Holes:
Use a thin piece of metal to protect the padding from the drill bit. I used the metal nut tightening tool that was included to protect the padding.

Start out with a 1/32 drill bit then go size by size up until ¼ inch.

Step 6 – Installing The Post Anchors:
The order of the parts of the anchors should look like this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/Yesitsdrew5310/Subaru%20Stuff/DIY%20HANS%20Install/_DSC6641.jpg

Unbutton the cheek padding, it will give you more room to work with. There are 3 buttons per side.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/Yesitsdrew5310/Subaru%20Stuff/DIY%20HANS%20Install/_DSC6657.jpg

Apply some threadlock to the nut threads and insert with metal tool into helmet between the padding and the shell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/Yesitsdrew5310/Subaru%20Stuff/DIY%20HANS%20Install/_DSC6653.jpg

Now apply threadlock to the bolt. And insert this into the hole and start screwing in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/Yesitsdrew5310/Subaru%20Stuff/DIY%20HANS%20Install/_DSC6656.jpg

After you screw that in, tighten with the flat sides being level to ground when the helmet is being worn.

After that is tightened up, everything is finished! Here are some more photos of the HANS device on my helmet:

I don't think I'd want to be drilling into my helmet, but I don't really know much about it to be ohnest.

It's a very easy install. I did it to my last 2 helmets.

I'm a little confused that Drew went through all this effort, since the step by step instructions, including diagrams, are provided with every HANS that is shipped as well as on the HANS website here: http://hansdevice.com/app/site/media/sitemedia.nl/id.189/.f

Anyway, accurate step-by-step. Don't be afraid to try it yourself.

I thought the price of HANS includes them doing this to your own helmet...???

Most shops will install anchors for you if you buy a HANS from them. However, they do the exact same thing that this thread shows. It's a very simple job and I plan to do it when my HANS and new helmet arrive later this month.

Everyone - just keep in mind that if you intend to enter FIA-listed events (ie events listed on the international calendar), you must have a helmet with posts fitted from the factory and the associated sticker. Helmets with posts mounted after manufacture are not allowed.

This is not an issue for national-level competition.

Seriously? You didn't get any instructions along with your HANS? Did you buy it new?

I received a printed step-by-step as well as a CD that had a .pdf of the install instructions.

Sooooooo, how did you figure out how to install the posts without instructions?

I got the CD with the PDF, but I felt that was a bit confusing. I didn't know there was a step by step. And yup I got it brand-spankin new. Maybe Paul just forgot to send that in the package.

But in the true Drew Brashler fashion I couldn't install the HANS without making a photo DIY. I always make DIY's for everything. :D
