View Full Version : For What Car Jobs Would I Need A Press?

Hello,
I'm just wrapping up doing the lateral link/trailing link Group N bushing swap with a hand held ball joint press. Now my fiancee wants the same swap done on her car too. So it looks like there's another 12 bushings in my future. While it wasn't impossible to do with the ball joint press, I'm eyeing the ease of use of a floor mounted 20 ton hydraulic press in my own garage (rather than driving 2 counties over to get to one).

I'm trying to decide if it makes financial sense to get a press rather than either having to rent the ball joint press from the store or spend $30 on gas to drive to a press (or worse yet, pay a mechanic). Obviously, if the only thing I'll ever us a press for is those 12 bushings on her car, it's not worth it. However, if the need for a press will come up from time to time, then it's worth investing in one of my own.

So what jobs on a car require a press?

Thanks,

Ty

Most of the time, you'd need one for bushings and that's it. I'd recommend posting in your local forum. Either a local has one or maybe they can recommend a closer shop with one or perhaps there's a you do it garage center that has one that you aren't aware of. Local help>our help. :)

Some wheel bearing jobs will require a press as well.
