View Full Version : Ebay Harness Bar and Camera Mount

I recently took a chance on buying these two parts to add to my wagon.
The first thing I ordered was the Harness bar for $120. I was very satisfied with the order, quality and fitment.:)
It took 5 days from payment to reception to get to my door. It was bubble wrapped and came with installation instructions for both WRX Wagon and Sedans. Welds are spot-on. The bar installed easily ( did it alone ) and was careful not to scratch the plastics in the car. The directions recommended 2 people and to use cardboard on the ends so that the plastics didnt get scratched.:)
It took 30 minutes to install, start to finish.
**** If you are tall and have to drive with your seat all the way back you will have to leave the 2 center support brackets out. The seat will not slide all the way back with them installed.:alien:
After the winter I will paint and pad it.

The next thing to install was the Ebay Harness Bar Camera Mount. This piece was listed for a Brand Name Harness Bar, but I figured what to hech, I will give it a shot. $70
As you can see in the pics the item was nicely boxed. Maybe a little too much, but better safe than sorry. It was in a small box, the small bax was packed in a medium box filled with styrofoam.:)
The mount itself is made out of cast alunimun. It is very nicely made. It came with the 4 allen bolts to tighten it down.
It mounted to the Generic Harness Bar like it was made for it, perfect. It took 5 minutes to secure it to the harness bar. The camera connected to it flawlessly.

That's ok, I'm too short to reach the steering wheel and be able to drive from the backseat.

I probably should only AutoX this year anyway since this current car is less than 1yr old and barely has over 5k mi on it. The last time I was at the Glen I overcooked the S-turns at the end of the back straight with my 02 WRX, I spun out and went into the gravel trap. I came to rest with the front bumper about 3ft from the retaining wall. The whole drivers side of the car looked like it got hit with bird shot. I had to limp down into town to the local garage at lunch time and have them remove all the rocks from between the rim and the tire bead on all 4 tires. I made it back in time to finish out the last 2 sessions of the day. I have the whole thing on film, maybe at the next meet I'll show it off.

But anyway, I should probably bring this back on-topic.

Does the camera mount allow the camera to sit high enuff to clear the dash? It looks a little low but maybe it's just the angle you took the pics at.

dibblejr

I tested it today cruising through Mexico trying to find some nice back roads. If you have the DEFI gauge pod it blocks it a little. With my camera its not to bad, I kine to see the road alot more though.
I got the angle of the mount a little down and am going to correct it. If not I am going to fabricate aome kind of adapter. All in all it is a good buy.
I have uploaded my vid to my laptop now all I have to do is segment it and post it on you tube. I had a lot of fun, not what I expected. I pulled into a praking area and it had over a foot of unplowed snow.
Let me know if you are going to run the Glen, I know Im going, easy to remove and install the bar.
Maybe we should do the meet and drive to WG. (LOL)

I'm still on the fence about the camera mount. I have a Samsung digital sports camera that has the bullet camera, I used suction cups and can mount the bullet cam on the roof/hood/glass. The only issue I'm having with it is the wind noise. I used several dollar store suction cups and some zip ties, the camera stays put at 100+ mph. The only reason I'm considering the mount is to keep the camera on the inside to reduce the wind noise.

That sounds interesting, I have all kinds of things to mount a bullet camera to. Top light bar roof rack and they have stayed on in access of the speed you mentioned.
Whered you get the bullet cam? If it is smaller than mine you wouldnt be able to see the road for sure, however the offer is still open to borrow my cam and if you can use the bullet in another spot like feet work or side view that would make for some interesting video.

The bullet cam came with the Samsung camera. I got it at Best Buy, it was about $600 (eeek!).

There's also another harness bar listed that is actually about $10 cheaper and has a silver powdercoat. The only difference is the one you posted pics of has the supports that tie into the inside/center seat bracket bolts and the other ties into the outer bolts by the doors. Makes me consider the other bar since it's cheaper and comes powdercoated, saves me the time and effort of doing a crappy paint job myself.

The only real drawback I see would be if you have rear-seat passengers alot it looks like they might bash their knees getting in/out of the car on the outside mounts.

Whatchu think Jay-R?

dibblejr
02-12-2007, 06:15 PM
^^ I wonder if the outside supports if the seat will go further back? When I got mine that was the only choice other than paying like $300 for a Cusco Bar. I will have to check the other one. I have never had anyone in the back seat accept for Salmon.

I dare to bet that Subaru has not changed the seat belt mount possitions and has not increased the width of the cabin.
Chances are it will fit. If it didnt for the price you could sell it to another member here and not lose any $.
Maybe a SUby Technician will see your question and chime in.

^thanks

is there any benefit if the supports are tie to the center seats brackets as oppose to the outter bolts by the door.?

dibblejr
02-12-2007, 08:50 PM
I was debating this in my mind. In my opinion if you actually use this bar for it's purpose the center supports would provide more support and safety. Shifting the entire shock load from the sides to include the center.
If you are just using it as a show bar then it wouldnt matter. I will probably take the center supports off just to see if it affects the camera. I will them be able to move my seat back for more leg room.
I may just buy the side supported one and give the one above away at the next meet I host.

You are way too nice and have alot more $$$ than I do it would seem.

I was thinking the same thing about how the center supported bar would be more ridgid but Sparco's bar is supported at the outside. This was one of the 1st bars out if my memory serves me and I haven't seen or heard of any complaints about it.

I just like the fact that it's cheaper and I wouldn't have to paint it.

Somebody needs to buy one and test it and leave feedback.

hey dibble, i have a much thicker harness bar (think the pipe diameter) do you think that camera mount will work with a bigger size bar than yours?

dibblejr
02-13-2007, 06:29 PM
With my bar the mount closes all the way, I would think it would work on a little larger diameter bar, however the mount would not close all the way. You may be able to take a dremel to it to make it close.
You could also find some threaded rod that is the same thread as your camera, drill and tap your bar, use the double nut method to secure the threaded rod to the bar and screw it into your camera.
You could get a flat piece of steel welded to your bar and drill that for the threaded rod or just a regular bolt.
I also thought about my tri-pod adapter- it could be utilized as well.

A lot of options out there.

Good Luck
Jay-R

There are 4 bolts, the directions that come with it are perfect.
As far as videos I have done some snow driving and I will post a link as soon as I get them on youtube.

gotboost02
03-05-2007, 12:15 AM
you have to use the supplied bolts ... now that you got them the trick is to put the main part of the bar on your back and raise up slightly ... the bolt enters at a downward angle ... kinda tricky and frustrating but it does go in there :) ... and those bolt heads are 16mm and not the 14mm you used to take the stock one out

dibblejr
03-06-2007, 12:14 PM
^^ I am 5'11" and I think all of the harness bars are going to give you about the same support. Remember they are not made for comfort, they are made for safety and the propper "racing" driving possition. For the track you will be perfect however for DD not to comfortable.

Jay-RIf your car does not have a rollbar/cage you shouldn't run harnesses so that if your roof collpases you can move. I wouldn't run a harness bar for anything other than autox.

The only real drawback I see would be if you have rear-seat passengers alot it looks like they might bash their knees getting in/out of the car on the outside mounts.Or they might bash their heads in an accident  Just putting rollbar padding on this thing won't make it safe - rollbar padding is, AFAIK, designed for a helmeted head, not a bare one. If you have one of these don't put anyone in your rear seats, or take it out between events.

That said, for $120 this looks like a good autox season pickup...

Oh yeah, the real reason I opened this thread. How wide is the part where the harnesses go? It looks like on a real race seat where there are two separate holes, a set of 3" harnesses would be right on top of each other. Just from looking at pictures the Sparco bar seems to have a lot more room in that area of the bar.

I am doing some mods to an 07 STi this Sunday, if the owner will let me try to see if it will fit in his car I will let you all know, unless someone does it first.

For vids click on the link in me 1st or 2nd post. If you have an Sti scoop you may want to get the other camera mount that is adjustable, it is quite a bit taller.

Do you think it would be okay to use harnesses with a roll bar, such as Autpowers with a harness bar and cross bar, for track and street use?

As long as you have rollover protection you should be OK.

I don't want to beat that one to death; it's in the Motorsports archives, tho.
