I don't know if this is the right thread or what, but does anyone have any ideas what might be causing my mode selector door to get stuck.

I have a 98 Impreza L.. the hvac uses three metal cables connected to doors in the vent system to control the recirc/fresh, temperature, and mode (def, feet, dash vents) selector. The mode selector door is stuck. I tried to remove the dash, but I had issues with the passenger airbag. I got the entire dash unbolted/screwed from the car, but I can't get the passenger airbag unplugged. It's got a yellow plug with the green tab/switch thing on it. I tried pushing the green tab and pulling the plug but the thing is either stuck in there or I'm not pulling something right? (sorry, no pictures, can't get a camera) Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

The airbag connectors have a double latch. They can be a PITA to get disconnected. Here's the Subaru info on how to release them.

Cool.. Now I'll actually know how to do it next time... had to put the car back together unfortunately. Thanks for the info. Atleast I got all the green off the back of the gauges for all that work. :)

Any luck on finding out why your vent door was hanging up?

I have an 01 Legacy Outback that has a similar issue. I can only use Defrost and bi-level Defrost/Floor. Anything else and I get this nasty repetitive cluck-clunck-clunk sound as it attempts to move the vent doors futilely. Sounds like something is going to break, its pretty loud. I've scoured the STIS service manuals for this and all I can find is an exploded diagram but no straightforward steps on how to get into there. Anyone know what kind of work I'm in for, or have any advice? I hate getting into dashes... may just have to jump in. Hope I don't need to evac the AC to get to it...
