Anyone out there making a plexiglass windscreen for the WRX? I am sure I can have one made but being able to buy one already on the market has its advantages.

View Full Version : Plexiglass Windscreen? Don-HRD 02-11-2007, 02:42 AM Anyone out there making a plexiglass windscreen for the WRX? I am sure I can have one made but being able to buy one already on the market has its advantages. deebee8 02-11-2007, 10:23 PM I looked for ages but to no avail, maybe someone with better luck might chime in. I've seen a couple suby's with one off replacements, but keep in mind you would need a reinforcement bar down the middle to prevent to windscreen from deforming due to wind deflection. Also, some sort of clear film to prevent scratches. Plexiglass scratches and pits pretty easily. Lots of race drivers such as Porsche cup and such (CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG) Use multiple layers of film on the window, as each gets dirty they just peel them off. Just some things to think about! Don-HRD 02-11-2007, 10:49 PM I am aware of all plexiglass's Pros and Cons, having used them for years in Porsches, Mazdas, etc. Never used tear-offs on the windsheild, prefering instead to use coated polycarbonate windshields from MA Shaw etc. and a reinforcement bar in these cars isnt a big deal at all. The biggest thing about making them myself is the coatings used by MAShaw and others to prevent scratching and fogging. I imagine I can have one made by Five-Star or similar like we were able to do with the C5-R's, but I kinda assumed that one would have already been made for the WRX. If I cant find a ready-made one and have a few made I will post up to see if anyone else has interest. shige 02-11-2007, 10:56 PM I know one company, Percy's Speedglass makes pre-formed windows but they have a limited selection. They use some special coating to help resist scratching. I suspect using your wipers would accelerate scratching even with the coating. Speedglass isn't cheap either. I suspect, you'll probably have to get some one to do a small batch for you. deebee8 02-12-2007, 12:54 AM I am aware of all plexiglass's Pros and Cons, having used them for years in Porsches, Mazdas, etc. Never used tear-offs on the windsheild, prefering instead to use coated polycarbonate windshields from MA Shaw etc. and a reinforcement bar in these cars isnt a big deal at all. And i couldnt find anything, if you do end up having some one off mades id be interested in one for mine. Jack ffr1846 02-12-2007, 02:14 PM My understanding is that bending Lexan isn't a big deal to do. I'm getting a lexan windshield for my Cobra, but I don't have wipers and the shape is pretty mildly curved from a flat piece, so far easier than a Subaru or other production car. The basic stock is cheap, in my opinion. We did a group buy and my shipped price for the coated piece was $118. I believe we had about 20 that were ordered at the same time and 10 came into one location in New England. I still have to get off my butt and go pick it up. jack deebee8 02-13-2007, 09:51 PM 118$ isnt bad at all, i suppose you are correct when it comes to bending it to fit. But thinking about it..... wouldnt the tension from the windshield pop the seal loose where it meets the frame, especially in hot weather, or did you buy it PREFORMED so that it wasnt actually "bent" persay |
