View Full Version : maybe this is the tech side of the house
folkstyle171 02-12-2007, 12:55 PM What it is: '97 impreza RA. EJ20K. All I have is a HKS intake that came with it. I put on a blitz filter, then it started acting up. I thought it was due to turbulent air (no pipe for the blitz just straight onto the MAF)
It would all of a sudden at idle loose all vacume, it would almost die when it got close to 0 pressure. It sounds like when you put a huge cam on a car the way it is loping. It threw one CEL for like 5 minutes, went into limp mode, then went away. about 3 days later it did the same thing.
I do not speak japanese to go to autobacs and ask if they have a OBD II reader so I did not get the code. ( I find out today Japanese cars dont have OBD ports, they are still propriatary)
I thought since the HKS intake never acted up, put it back on and reset the ECU (dumb I know).
Now I let it warm up to operating temp, the whole time at just a touch over 0 vacume. It is normally at 500 mmHg when warm, and a tad less vacume when heating up.
I took it around the block, popping and spiting the whole time and it is at a constant just over 0 vacume at idle. It does see good vacume when I down shift and let the engine wind down, and with that I am stumped.
Could I have a bad MAF maybe? Any suggestions would be greatly helpful. I have checked all the vacume lines that I can see, and I have to get to work tomorrow. Please thow it out there if you think you know. Thanks
sounds like a post throttle plate vacuum leak
check the fuel pressure regulator/charcoal line/ brake booster/map sensor
i took apart my 97 wrx motor Saturday to find all sorts of cracked hoses ...
folkstyle171 02-12-2007, 01:11 PM Yeah I will double check the oter things, but this car is a MAF set up. Wish it where a map sensor, they arent 300 bucks
it has both, its next to the boost control solenoid on the fender, the hose goes back to the top of the manifold
there is also a PCV under the throttle might check that too

Is that the small cylinder with the clear plastic top you can see the 2 wires inside (control solenoid) then the thin that says denso on it must be a map, I thought it looked like one. learn something new every day thanks.
folkstyle171 02-16-2007, 07:42 AM I did the spray carb cleaner on the vacume hoses. There was no reaction, and I sprayed every line in there, including where it connects. I am stumped, and seems like it may end up being the maf. All te mafs I have come across have been wrong(just to test out), I am at a loss.
95sti 02-16-2007, 08:47 AM Have you tried zeroyon? Lots of guys on the Japan forum that could probably recommend a shop near the Air Force base up there and several guys that speak Japanese may be able to help you out. Most of the people on the forum are in Okinawa but several from mainland also on various military bases.

Yeah I just found it an hour ago. Awesome, looks like there are a ton of supras FDs and 240s down there and very few subarus. I got a post on the rcca site, but zeroyon looks to be promising, Thank you for the heads up
95sti 02-16-2007, 09:07 AM look up old_duwel on this board or ZY, he is on Okinawa but used to be up in Misawa and probably knows some good contacts up there still. Subies are suprisingly rare over there still but they are starting to get more common. Most of the subie guys there are on this board too under the same names.
linsavy 02-16-2007, 12:00 PM Yup your MAF is specific to the V3/V4 because it is larger diameter. New ones are $$$.
Matt Monson 02-16-2007, 01:31 PM I have got a large MAF off of a late 90's Leggy TT. It is the same size and plug style as my Ej20K MAF. But it's got a purple label (instead of green) and is a slightly different part number. I would let if go for pretty cheap if you wanted to take your chances with it.
folkstyle171 02-16-2007, 03:47 PM ^^and sadly enough it seems Colorado is my best lead on this yet. Matt I need to check this junkyard tomorrow and I will get with you.
Matt Monson 02-16-2007, 04:01 PM he is in japan ...
And your point is? I ship to Japan with some regularity. :p
linsavy 02-16-2007, 04:02 PM Ralli-spec can get new ones. Maybe they would tell you who their JDM supplier is.

Oh yeah by the way, thank you very much, and it is just to an APO so no more than to cali for any shipping.

There was no sticker with P/N or anything so. Is this the type connection yours has matt?
folkstyle171 02-19-2007, 03:21 AM Went to the junkyard, there are none there that work at all.
Matt what would you look to get for that maf?
