View Full Version : Boost Issues ????
bobbymorgan425 02-20-2007, 10:29 AM Ok, I have an:
06 WRX
Mods: Custom Tune,3" TBE(catless),EQ Length Header,Short Ram,Silicone Hose,UnderDrive Pulleys,MBC(sometimes).....
Here is the deal:
A few weeks ago I had installed a, XPT stage 2 tune,
which is designed to run at around 17-18psi max,
and the most my engine would see is 14.75 or so...
I tried adjusting the wastegate arm, and may have picked up .25 or so psi, but not much...I threaded it in
all the way, NO THREAD SHOWING !!!
So then I installed my MBC, I had to open it almost all the way to finally start getting any noticable boost increases, finally got it to peak @ around 18psi in 4th gear, aorund 3000-3500 rpm, for a split second and fall off extremly quickly.
but the vehicle ran a strong 12.82 @ 105.51, and it felt like I could have done better, maybe a 12.70-2 @ 106 or so....
Last Friday I had a custom tune installed, in SA and he set it at 19psi,@ 3-5th, I believe...
I uninstalled the MBC, and drove it after the flash, and it peaked @ 15.1 psi, although it drove with no problems...
then installed the MBC to see if I could get the booost back up, and it went straight to 18psi again, at lower rpms,
in 3-5th, so I went straight to the track and it fell on its face in 3rd,4th, felt likr the engine completyly shut off...
So he came out and adjusted my fuel cut off higher, and now its not shutting off, in any gear but, I cant seem to get to TARGET BOOST LEVELS, WHY????
bobbymorgan425 02-20-2007, 10:34 AM Also boost is very inconsistant, sometimes I'll see 18psi, other times 16 psi. WHY ????
Unabomber 02-20-2007, 11:57 AM Here's the deal...you get your car tuned for XX PSI. Then you stop messing with it! Take that MBC and chuck it into the woods. Undo what you did to your wastegate. I pray you counted the turns you took on it so you can undo that amount of turns. Then get a tune. Then don't mess with it. Messing with your boost willy-nilly via the wastegate acutator and MBC is the reason you are all messed up now. You need to talk to your tuner and express your desires and discuss with him the ways to meet your goals. Doing things the way you are doing is terribly bad for your motor.

I will do !!!
Why will it not hit target boost levels, with out the
MBC, and wastegate arm being modified???
It still has the stock td04
a winner by default 02-20-2007, 03:39 PM just talk to your tuner, he will have all of your answers:)

why.
you got tuned and then you pissed it all away by changing your combo. Listen to unabomber, throw your MBC away and get the car set up properly then leave it.
bobbymorgan425 02-20-2007, 08:17 PM why.

do any of yall not hear what I'm saying ???
When they set it to run at xxpsi, and it doesnt even come within 3-4psi of that...
what would be the cause??????
bobbymorgan425 02-20-2007, 08:21 PM why.

How can you say i pissed it all away, when im getting better boost levels w/the mbc, when i wasnt with out it?????
Like I said he set the boost to run at 19psi, and it was only runnin 15 WHY??????
I just want to know why it wont hit boost levels
set in the flash with out the mbc????
chgabbs 02-21-2007, 01:25 AM I feel your pain!! I just installed a Helix catted dp, 3" Invidia cat-back, FRAM Air-Hog air filter, and flashed my ECU with the XPT Stage 2 map. The most boost I'm hitting is 1 bar = 14.9 PSI. I am not feeling any power gain what so ever from Stage 1 which just consisted of the cat-back and a Stage 1 map that's similar to Cobbs Stage 1. WTF!!!!!!!! Anyone have answers?????

If you had your re-flash/tune done in cold ambient temp and now the ambient temp is higher then the boost will be down a little to what it was set for in the cold. Did that happen?
Fluctuating temps can do that for ECU re-flash/tunes, stand alone EBCs give consistent boost regardless of the temp.

that makes perfect sence...
But we did the tunes and on both, the car would do no better than 15.1 psi with out the aid of the mbc, when
the boost was set much higher...
and im talking immdeiatley after the flash, durring data logging sessions....
why.

No, he should get it tuned with the MBC...he wants/needs that full boost in 1 and 2 for his interests....only the MBC will give him that.
If the temps went up outside, you may just have to tighten your MBC to achieve the same boost.
A 20 degree change in temps means mayabe 1-2 psi on my MBC...
antny 02-22-2007, 05:28 AM Is this a e tune? if so I would get on the phone and start asking the tuner questions instead of trying to fix the problem yourself. If the car was hitting target boost before the tune and not hitting target boost after it that is not a turbo problem or boost controller porblem that is a tune problem. Something on that map which I am going to guess the WDC are probably not right is why you arent seeing target boost.
