View Full Version : how to make jspec 'wrx' from RS...
FLUBYUx2 05-31-2001, 01:38 AM ive got me a 01 sedan, and i remember on gran turismo, the 2.5RS's on there, are WRX's.
aside from converting to a Jspec engine/turbo unit, how can i make MY USDM RS equivalent to the japanese versoins of this car???
just curious, cuz i wanna have something that will give the NEW WRX's a run for the money.
thanks
chris
IMPREZA GUY 05-31-2001, 01:49 AM well so far the 2001 is pretty much there already but just need a bit more touching up, for the looks side of things, you will need the clear front corner lenses, some red\clear rear tail lights, rear bumper spats, and a front lip spoiler, and of course the version 6 wing, and umm all the things i listed is to make the JDM WRX STi version 6 impreza, but to have a better fit for the rear spats you may want to buy a whole new rear bumper. wait i for got, you will need a version 6 front grill with a pink I badge, so umm you can get these from many people, just look at the links and vendor\private classifieds section. OOH OOH OOH, one more thing, all body parts including your stock side skirts should be painted body color, or you can go the north ursalia point and leave the front lip, side skirts, and rear spats the stock black color that they come in.
Buy a used J-spec WRX for cheap and swap VIN #'s.
mykrrrr 05-31-2001, 04:32 AM Eby - you said "j-spec" "WRX" & "cheap" in the same sentence...hahahaha http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/wink.gif

What's wrong with that? A full blown WRX STI only cost in the mid 20's in Japan new! Used cars go for dirt cheap over there. As I understand it, they have to pass a semianual inspection that is kinda expensive and there are hefty fines if you fail. So after a car is a few years old, many people opt to get a brand new one rather than risk failing the inspection. I've heard that they sell a lot of the used ones to Australia.

FLUBYUx2 05-31-2001, 02:46 PM sweet, is the WRX grill different from the 2.5RS grill? or is it the same w/ just the Pink 'i' badge?
and, that lip spoiler u speak of, is that like the P1 lip spoiler that i have been wanting to get all along?
also, are u tellin me that they have WRX's over there that have Painted and NON-painted ground fx? cuz if they DO have WRX's that have non painted ground fx, then ill keep mine that way, i think the dark gray compliments my SRP very well.
oh yea, how do u spose i go about gettin the same kind of WRX performance out of my USDM EJ25?? turbo kit right? any ideas who i should talk to in order to get one?
im assuming jcsports is out of the question?
thanks
chris
SHADOWES 05-31-2001, 03:35 PM Don't forget about WRX/STi seats, struts, springs, and the STi six speed trans mition with the variable tourque split(for the RA).
STI wheels, aluminum control arms (for the RA) and the rear window wiper thing.
all that plus about 100hp will get ya what you want... it might be cheaper and simpeler to import one.
SHADOWES 05-31-2001, 03:39 PM if you give the RS about 220hp you will be beating stock US-spec WRX's, and 220hp in an RS is not hard to get alot of people have more than that. if all you want to do is beat the WRX.
RS2001 05-31-2001, 06:12 PM Hmmmmmm, let me sum it all up for you as best I can.
Engine: JDM WRX engine, Transmission, Rear Diff.
Suspension: WRX springs, shocks, control arms, rear sway bar.
Brakes: 4-pot fronts, 2-pot rears (not a direct bolt on), probably a new master cylinder.
Interior: WRX front seats, matching rears, steering wheel.
Exterior: clear corners, red/white taillights.
And all this is just for a standard WRX, there's a whloe lot more goodies you'll need to make it an STI.http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
I'm sure i left out a few things too.

FLUBYUx2 06-01-2001, 06:25 AM damn, quite a chore. lol
converting my RX7 to a Savanna Infini would be easier!!!
well, i dont think ill be importing anything. so actual JDM parts might be out of reach for me, at least the BIG ones, like 6 speed trannys, differentias, STi engines.
maybe, i should say 'WRX quality' like, if BPM made a big dia. brake kit w/ calipers and what not, i think thatd satisfy my need, know what i mean?
you think a stock driveline would hold up to 220 hp?? i hear 2nd gear is kinda fragile...
id like to make this happen, at least, the looks end of it first.
Hell, ANYone w/ money can go out and BUY a 02 WRX now...but NO one can just GET A 01 WRX...unless they import it. but most people dont know that there always HAS been a WRX...
i like the 'what the hell is that?' reponse that i get from people when they see the car. im lookin for something REALLY dramatic http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif
thanks guys

Dori Dori 06-01-2001, 07:17 AM Don't even think about importing a car from Japan/Europe/Australia-anywhere that they are right hand drive. The DOT (department of transportation) now requires (started November of 2000) that all right hand drive vehicals coming into the US must pass left hand drive crash testing (that means you have to buy 2 WRX's and crash test one, which could cost up to $100,000.00) Also, any car that is 3 years (or less) old must have OB2 installed. If not, than you have to get it done yourself. That could cost between 5 and 10 thousand dollars. Don't forget about the taxes and customs! So, to drive a 1998+ J-spec imported WRX you would probably be spending about $175,000.00; to do it legalyhttp://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif Sorry!
98mpreziveRS 06-01-2001, 09:25 AM dude, just get a turbo kit on that ej25, get a turbo legacy 'box, and the body parts you want and there ya go http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif stronger trans, more power, and wrx looks http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif
FLUBYUx2 06-01-2001, 11:33 PM dude, i like the way u think 98mpresive. im tryin to pick out a turbo kit right now.
but, after that, what else would i have to upgrade inorder to keep the car from tearin itself up?
u know, like grenading the tranny, center diff, or rear diff...or CV joints, or half shafts?
like what points would i need to address after bumpin up power?
anywho
thanks
chris
Sanguine 06-02-2001, 03:08 AM You'd probably get a lot of good info in the Turbo Powertrain forum. There's a lot of turbo'd RSes out there, and a few searches would probably net you all the answers you need.
scooby5 06-02-2001, 06:07 AM An easier way to do a conversion to JDM without bringing over two WRXs and crashing one, is to buy an entire wreck (STi) in Japan, then have it stripped in parts and shipped over. That means getting every single part (tagged of course) along with the powertrain.
Used car parts aren't subject to the import restrictions the vehicle would be. Then rebuild the NA RS with the container load of parts you get.
Worked for me.
FLUBYUx2 06-02-2001, 11:58 AM scooby5, how much did taht run you, to bring the Crates over?? just curious
thanks
chris
david2z4 06-02-2001, 02:05 PM I think for about 20,000 you can get all the stuff to do a full conversion (everything needed) to convert your stock RS to a true WRX left hand drive.
edit: misread, drivetrain only would be about $15,000 for conversion to a Ver.6 with less than 30,000 miles on it.

FLUBYUx2 06-02-2001, 10:34 PM cool, i saw the part on Rallispec.com about converting to a WRX. not cheap.
i think, after our warranty runs out, we will take a drive to NJ, and have it turboed, w/ all the options. i think in about 3 yrs, we will have $6000 to $7000 extra dollars saved up to blow on a turbo kit.
i would definitly trust rallispec w/ my car. besides, itd be sweet to have small discrete stickers that say 'Rallispec' and then the JDM 'WRX' stickers too. nothing extravagant, just gets the point across, hehe.
thanks
chris
FLUBYUx2 06-03-2001, 10:55 PM thanks nick. i dont know if ill end up importin a WRX. i may just dress it up w/ body parts, and beef up the driveline to give the NEW wrx a run for the money. i spose ill convince dad to start settin some money aside, so that 3 yrs from now, we can make a drive to NJ, and get the FULL turbo package from rallispec!
id put some money in on it, but then again, I didnt BUY the car! haha... i dunno, maybe i should, he does plan on helpin me w/ my TA.
thanks nick

scooby5 06-04-2001, 01:02 AM FluByUx2,
The cost of shipment is not that high, cost me $1250 . The thing is you have to find a reputable garage that will do a professional job of stripping the car and tagging the parts for you.
Mine was a rear-ended vehicle, so the back end couldn't be salvaged, so I had to get some rear drivetrain parts separately, but overall, I'm very happy with how it worked out.
