Well, i was just wondering, who started out with the big fog lights and the giant rally spoiler? BOTH the Impreza and Evo 3-6 has it...

I'd have to say that the old Audi's and stuff back in the 70's started it if im not mistaken...

Well, back in Audi's day, they had to homologate certain parts of the car - basically they had to sell a certain number of cars to the public that had certain body parts on it, before they could use those parts in the WRC.

I don't believe that applies any longer. Doesn't answer your question though. As far as the Imp verses the EVO, just check back in the years.

Well.. AFAIK. the Lancer EVO, EVO II, and EVO III didn't have the big fog lights at the front. That only started with the EVO IV. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif The WRX had the big fog lights since it was released. Funny thing though.. the STI versions never had fog lights, that's why they cover the holes with the plastic covers. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif Oh.. and the STIs always had the big wings. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

By the way.. I am talking about the road cars here, not the rally cars http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif

Anyone noticed how the rear ends of the mitsu SUVs look very much like the rear of the Outbacks? (This was true until subaru changed the rear in MY2000 or so).

I have noticed alot of car makers copying the Outback style.... Probably because it was so succesful.

mitsu evo was born to combat the impreza. both rule! They are like the Ryu and Ken of japan's saloons.

Actually, both were released in the fall of 92, but the Lancer started the WRC earlier.

Both cars were both Manufacturers' natural progressions from the cars they were using at the time( the Legacy and the Galant).

Hmmm....lets see, i think that Audi was really the first to start it. With their 4WD saloon. Kinda started the ball rolling in that direction. With the large wings, and big body extensions, in its Groupe-B EVO-II form.
Once Groupe-B was phased out and Groupe-A became the leading class, i beleive toyota was the first to introduce a Japanes 4WD sport sedan. In the Celica ST-165 GT-4 (All-Trac for all the americans that dont get that). From there Mitsu released the EVO-I, which i beleive was the first car to sport the large rear wing in that configuration. Currently at the time Subaru was still using the square boxy legacy turbo in rally. Then Ford released the Escort Cosworth, which took the rear wing to rediculas proportions. Becoming the first mass prodced car to ever be shipped with a downforce inducing body. I beleive the Cosy also introduced fog lights into the fray. Then Subaru finally released the Impreza. But it DID NOT have the large ring on it. In fact it was nothing more then a small spoiler like was on teh ST-165 and ST-185, however it did have the built in fod lamps on the front. Then when the EVO-IV waas released, with fog lights intact, Subaru released its next STi v. III which introduced the high wing like the Evolution. Then toyota released the ST-205 with the Supra style rear wing, and other large aerodynamic changes. But by that time, the WR Car was the lead class. And Toyota cheated getting them banned from WRC competition for three years...only to come back with the Corolla WRC. Currently Mitsubishi is the only manufacture to follow the Groupe-A homologation rules.
Groupe-A is a highly modified street chassis, running mostly stock components. WIth very few changes allowed to the systems of the car. ITs like a Groupe-N car on crack, basically.
Where as a WR Car is a purpose built rally car, bassed off of the stock chassis, with required components off of the stock chassis, such as glass, tail lights, doors, and a bunch of other weird things like that.
If you can get ahold of the FIA homologation rules for rally racing, and Groupe classification, you can get a good idea of what all is involved.

But i think everyone kinda copied everyone. Going with what worked best, and capatalizing on it. I know the large wing thats common n WRC cars today, came from Mitsu. And the driving lights, from Subaru. But there are pleanty of other influences in there as well.

Man, The Cossie was crazy, but it was great...that wing was amazing...too bad it never came here...i bet it would be popular with the ricers nowadays, actually...no it's probably better that it didn't come over...then we'd see every civic with a cosworth wing

***Jaw drops to floor***

WOW! That Impreza concept is sharp! Although I love the production version of the new-age Impreza, I wish the concept went into production.

It looks like an absolutely perfect cross between the previous Impreza and the 2000+ Legacy. Very sleek hood and front end!

As for the Evo7 concept - IMO it's hideous!

Haha, actually, ive seen a couple of CRX's with Cossie type wings on them...made me sick.

Those drawings arent fromt eh design tables of Mitsubishi or Subaru, but are from a Japanese auto magazine, that is NEVER anywhere close to acurate on their conceptual drawings. Al though, they are preaty decent at photoshop, ill give them that.
