Should I be getting a red or yellow top battery for my car? I'm not really sure what the difference between starting batteries and deep cycle batteries are.

I run Polk/Momo MM6's through a 1000 watt 4 channel Polk/Momo amp, no subs, and several gauges (not sure if that matters). I experience some pretty cold winters as well if that matters.

Either will do fine, the CCA ( cold cranking amps ) on either is quite higher then the stock subby battery......IMHO go with the cheeper of the two if an Optima is still your final choice.

Your only problem is going to be that the posts on the Optima's are reveresed. I know the Red Top has a version that's correct for our scooby but I dunno about the Yellow, I know there is a yellow with the posts in the correct position but that it's too tall for our car. I usually run Yellow but if I can't find one that has the posts on the correct sides I'm probably just gonna go red.

Either a Red or Yellow top Group 35 will fit properly, just don't buy the "universal" type with both top and side terminals. Be sure it has top posts only.
The Red Top is classified as a "SLI" for starting/lighting/ignition battery and is the best choice for a daily driven vehicle. It also has some deep cycling ability although not as much as a Yellow Top. You can fully discharge a Red Top a number of times without damage but the Yellow Top has essentially unlimited deep cycling capacity.
As long as you don't run your system frequently for long periods with the engine off, a Red Top should be fine. Also the Red Top has the higher cranking amp rating of the two, the Yellow sacrifices some cranking power for the deep cycling although both have much more cranking capacity than the stock battery.

use the Braille race battery available at sojdm.com I use it and have HID highs, lows, and fogs. and a 2000 watt JL Audio System. no problems whatsoever. at the battery only weighs in at 12 lbs! and you don't have to drill any extra holes to mount it sideways.

I've read up on braille, and concluded that they should not be used in daily drivers. Probably going to go with the red top.

Good idea, considering you live in an area that gets cold in the winter.
