I've got a 96 Impreza Outback with the 2.2. I borked the engine and need to find a replacement. In searching car-part.com, it seems that the 96 isn't interchangeable with any other years, which I find hard to believe. Will the earlier 92?-95 & 97-up EJ22's swap over just fine? Will I have to swap some sensors from my engine to the new engine? Thanks,

short block should be interchangable. just maybe the heads and intake manifold u will have to rretain. check over in the conversion forums for the experts' minds.
I'm in the same boat with a busted bearing in my 99 Impreza Outback Sport. I found an EJ22 in a 90 Legacy for $1000 with only 120k miles but it's front-wheel drive (also solves the "shipping" issue I'd have finding the engine by itself, can drive it to where the broken one is). Wondering if the drivetrain and wiring is compatible. Will do the swap myself as long as I know it's plug-and-play...
Anybody got any ideas?

I ended up finding a 96 engine w/ 136k about 4 hours away and bought that. Didn't the 99 have the 2.5?

The Impreza Outback Sport is EJ22. After searching the N/A powertrain forum and the Conversion forum, looks like I could put an EJ25 shortblock in, but I'm afraid of wiring issues since this will be my first swap.

Drat, what's your location? I've got a good running condition EJ22 from a 2000 OBS I can give you real cheap. Same as 99 AFAIK.

Missed your reply. I'm in Brooklyn NY, so getting that engine from Nevada would be hell.
I picked up a phase 1 with 100k miles that's in great shape and am driving it upstate to do the swap this weekend. Don't have the hoist yet so probably won't start until next weekend, but $500 for the whole car is well worth it, especially since I can drive the engine to the broken one...

Can't beat that. Besides, I think I want to keep this extra engine around jsut in case. :D
