I went down to XXTuning today to check the place out. Some of you my have read that I did an 18g install last weekend. I was down there for a while talking about getting a pro-tune soon and about some other futre mods. Chris mentioned that I shoud see what I have now and compare it to where I want to be. I figured that since I drove the 2 hours to get there I might as well get it dynoed and was lucky that they did not have a busy day.
Got three pulls on the dyno for $75. The numbers were more than I expected. 286whp/275tq. Very close to the 293whp/292tq. So if anyone thinks that the numbers that Cobb claims are inflated they really aren't, even I was surprised because I tend to doubt manufacturerer claims.
The only problem I have right now is that my power and tq curve are poo poo. I actually drop hp between 3 and 4k. I am running pretty lean around 14 when it should be aroud 11. I am getting it pro-tuned soon and hoping to get about 315-320whp and 300tq when all said and done and work out all the quirks.

Mods include-(on 2006 TR)
FP 18g (non-ported)
Sti TMIC
Megan bellmouth Catless DP(cheap, looks and works great)
SPT Catback
Cobb AP running OTS 18g Map - 93 octane

at 14:1, you'll be lucky if your engine lasts long enough to get tuned

get it protuned ASAP! if you're gonna have chris at XX do it, you won't be disappointed, the guy knows his stuff.

Yeah, did anyone say anything about that when you were on the dyno?

That dip is probably knock, your car is eating itself alive...get it tuned now!

They did point out to me that my car is running lean. He also said that most likely the dip was the ECU adjusting itself to save the motor. He told me that it was dangerous but siad that I will be ok, its not too bad he said. I cant do the protune till after this weekend, then the next time I do it will not be till the 24th and there is a meet down there that day. I dont know if they will be able to do it then. I will try to find out.

The A/F curve was a bit on the lean side at the start of the RPM band, when the car initially hit 12psi, it was at 14's A/F, but then dropped immediately down to 12.2 tapering to 11.6 (if I remember correctly).

There was definitely some timing being pulled in the knock learned tables as the pulls seemed fairly consistant. He would benefit from the tune greatly, but I didn't want him to feel pressured into getting tuned if he wasn't ready.

Chris, don't you think there's a difference between a friendly and seemingly necessary suggestion and just trying to sell a tune? I don't think he would be all that ready to replace his motor if it went ka-boom, but he would most likely have to.

All right here's the deal. I set up an appt. with XXtuning for 3/14. I am getting the protune and a walbro installed. I couldn't even sleep thinking that bad things could "possibly" happen. I was planning on getting the protune anyway. If there is any possiblilty that my engine could get damaged i want to correct it as soon as possible. I wasnt planning on spending this much money this soons after I just spent over 1400 for the upgrade. But if this is what it takes to get my car running the way it sould be then I am fine with it. Also it will be good to have it done for the meet on 3/24.;)

They are grossly inflated. You dynoed on a Dynapak which reads high. Cobb(last time I checked) uses a Mustang Dyno which reads low.

Good call, and you should see more gains from your mods now, making that $1400 you just spent more worthwhile! Make sure to post back here and tell us how you made out.

I think no matter what dyno you go to they will be different. My friend has an 04 GTO and got a reading of 290whp on one dyno and 330whp on another. With the LS1 and the supporting mods + tune is more likely to be the 330whp. I would rather go to a dyno that "may" read high, I will feel happier that way.
So what is the accurate dyno anyway?
