I drive a '93 Impreza L AWD 1.8l nonturbo

My A/C used to work fine. Now it doesnt. The fans come on when the engine is at normal operating temps, so the fans/t-stat are fine I'd imagine. But when I turn on the A/C, its just hot air, and the fans do not come on. They will still come on at normal times when driving/idleing/etc even when the a/c is on blowing hot ait. Just no A/C and fans dont immedialtely turn on like they should from a/c.

Does this sound like a relay? Or wiring issues? Hopefully just relay or wiring thats easy enough to fix. Any recommendations on what to check would be great.

Thanks!

There is a pressure switch inline with the A/C hose that shuts off power to the compressor when the refrigerant level is low.
If it worked fine one day then not the next I would suspect the switch is bad else you may have a leak in the A/C system. When was the last time you used it? If this is the first time since winter you probably got a leak.
You can bypass the pressure switch but it's not recommended as it can ruin the compressor if too low.
Best bet is a shop else hook up a pressure gauge to the low side.

Thanks! It was filled up according to the previous owners reciepts less than a year ago. I have not checked the level. Do you know how much a shop may charge on average? It worked cold as hell, than one day it stopped working. I havent used it in a while, but it stopped working randomly one day about 3 months ago.

And before it stopped working, I would hear a quick chirp, only when a/c was on. Usually around 3k rpms. Than a/c stopped working, and the chirp has not come back since.

And do you know if that refrigerant that they sell at autozone/checker would work?

Sounds like you have a freon leak, You should bring it by FAT, we'll check everything out and let you know what's going on. It is most likely the high pressure side line from A/C compressor to condenser line (~$135.00)(Freon ~35.00) leaking. That's the norm for the Impreza's. We'll check it for like $20.00 Just ask for Chris or Robert. (602)-616-7001

I had fun in Vegas though losing all my money and puking on a cagefighters jacket, hahaha. He was a loser though who deserved it.
