View Full Version : TGV Delete Modification
dug-e-fresh 03-14-2007, 09:04 AM So I am going with a prototype intake manifold.
I used to run a 1 piece V.8 intake manifold with integrated risers. The prototype I am gonna be running requires the TGV risers as it was designed around them.
I order a set and get the newer side-feed 2.5 compatible TGV deletes. I run modded WRX top-feed injectors... so there is abit of an issue here.
Well, my solution... I am having the injector boss machined to accept the top-feeds. From there I will need to come up with an adaptor plate for mounting top-feed fuel rails... BUT, I believe this is gonna be a faily simple effective solution.
The expected outcome? A universal TGV delete that will work with both top and side feed injectors, and both WRX and STi fuel rails... so has anyone did anything like this before?
Would anyone be interested in having something like this available?

chrisarella 03-14-2007, 09:22 AM Why did you get the newer STI TGV deletes for side-fed injectors instead of the APS WRX or JDM STI TVG deletes? What is the advantage to having a universal fit over a specific fit for a WRX or STI? Is the STI version better than the WRX version? Or is it simply because the intake manifold prototype only accepts the STI version? More info for your approach please.
Edit: What is the deal with the intake manifold that you're prototyping? Is it going to be a reverse manifold to accept a V-mount intercooloer or so we can run shorter (more efficient) intercooler piping? That's what I'm looking for for my twinscroll setup.
dug-e-fresh 03-14-2007, 09:35 AM It was a poor item description from where I ordered them, they were called "JDM STI TGV Deletes" on the website.
BOTH styles you mention cost A LOT more.
I paid 220 shipped. The APS units are like $600+... and if you can find the 2 liter JDM deletes, expect to pay at least $300 for used ones, good luck finding new ones.
Crawford:

$400 + core (I have no core)
APS

$695
The benefit... cheaper alternatives without worrying what they will and wont fit.

SloRice 03-14-2007, 10:43 AM I want top feed injectors for my STI TGV's :)
GrimmSpeed 03-14-2007, 10:52 AM i've never heard of a universal stock like tgv housing that fits both top and side feed.

Well, I guess we will see how this turns out... I am fairly confident that this is what I will end up having in my hands. :D

Michael Melotte 03-14-2007, 02:23 PM If you wanted top feed injectors why not just order up wrx parts that accept the top feed fuel setup. Thats what I did and then you have the secondary injector setup that can be used for direct port nitrous and with the wrx fuel rails it would all just bolt right up. I don't see the advantage to accepting top or side feeds.
dug-e-fresh 03-14-2007, 02:31 PM MONEY
I don't see the advantage of spending HUNDREDS more on the other solutions.
I don't neccesarily WANT topfeed... I HAVE topfeeds, so thats what I am gong to stick with.
Not to mention, the modded stock WRX injectors that I have been running are the best (and cheapest) solution on the market for 400-600 whp.
I mean are you reading that I wrote????? Versatility is key, money is key.... if this works, this will be the best of both worlds.

GrimmSpeed 03-14-2007, 03:09 PM i'm a little confused now. why dont you just sell your sti tgv deletes and buy wrx tgv deletes?
2K4 STI 03-14-2007, 06:47 PM I think these are a great idea.
Not only the money savings but the ease of installation,Not having to swap the whole TGV assemblies and not having to try and sell the stockers to buy another set.
Good Luck Dug-e-Fresh
wgknestrick 03-15-2007, 12:21 AM I would've just bought Perrin STI fuel rails along with modified STI injectors.
I think you are just planning on boring the STI TGVs out to accept the top feed O-Rings, right?

So in my diagram, you would just bore out the final (smallest) injector C'Bore to the DIA needed for the top feeds. (Side feed rails shown in the CAD render ing)

Still have my TGV? I still own you a beer bro.

If that's the case, how is this going to be a "univeral fit"? Seems like you won't be able to choose between top- and side-feed, because it'll be bored out to accept top feeds. Don't get me wrong, if you've thought all this out and it works, that's terrific. But if you enlarge the injector bosses to accept top-feed injectors, won't it be too bored-out for side-feeds?
dug-e-fresh 03-15-2007, 08:26 AM Top-feeds are MUCH smaller than side feeds. Yes, I had the injector bossed bored out... but much further down into the "hole" in an area where it does not effect the side-feeds.
They are complete and I have test fitted the top-feeds... it worked perfectly. Now I just need to test fit some side-feeds. Again, there should be no problem with the side-feeds as I did not mess with ITS seating surface.
So let me make this clear.
I have modded WRX injectors that have served me well, I have been running them for over 3 years. I ran them to 11.2 @ 128 without issue. With them, I use Perrin WRX fuel rails. These are parts I have and have had for over 3 years. I've been very successful with them.
I used to run a Version 8 ONE peice intake manifold with built in injector bosses. It did not need a TGV housing of ANY kind.
I am ditching that for a prototype intake manifold. This prototype was designed around using TGV deletes, of which, was the only thing I DIDN'T have.
I could not find a set of reasonably prices WRX deletes. I did not have a set to modify. I ordered what I thought were "JDM TGV" deletes that would work with top-feeds. I was wrong.
I have successfully modified these to work with the top-feeds. I am confident they will STILL work with the side-feeds.
I think its pretty clear that this was cheaper than going with ANY other combo. My out of pocket expense was less than $300, and the TGV deletes I have are also ported. They are brand new. And I got it done in 2 days.
I'll snag pics sometime tonight...

Above is an illustration of what needs to be removed for the side-feed TGV to accept a top-feed injector. Notice it does not really affect the seating surface of the side-feed injector.

shvrdavid 03-15-2007, 10:19 PM I am going to measure some of the parts that I have laying around to see if there is an easier way to do this...
I know that there are many oe applications that use an adapter to seat the top feed injector into a hole that is about the same size as the ones in the sti part that you modified...
If I can find an adapter that goes right in, you shouldn't have to do anything other than mount the fuel rail...
I have been considering switching to some top feeds that I have laying around...
I'll get back to you on this...

are those your tgv deletes? if so, i'd touch them up a bit before installing...still some nasty material where the bar used to be

What I did was not that hard... but feel free to give it a shot. What I did was countersink the size hole for the top-feed o-ring to fit perfectly, and I sunk it down to the exact same height as the Version 8 manifold... so in relation, the injector would be spraying from the exact same X, Y and Z axis.

No, mine were cleaned up considerably inside.
Last night's weather was horrible, so I wasn't able to get pics of everything.
I did however confirm that the modification does NOT effect the install of the side-feed injectors.
So, in terms of the injectors... either top-feed's OR side-feed's can be used.
The only issue now is the mounting flange for the top-feed rails.
An adaptor plate/spacer will need to be fabbed up to finish off the install... two blocks of aluminum will sufffice... just got to measure the thickness.
I should have this taken care of over the weekend, and I WILL get pics.
