View Full Version : The Shop 505 whp 2007 STI - video and dyno sheets

Jimmy of The Shop has been making mad progress on his 3 week old 2007 STI

Tonight we tuned it with Ecutek with a "dual stage" reflash - (one map for pump and race gas)

The mods are

Perrin Gt35 Rotated Mount
APS Fmic and pipes
APS 3.5" Exhaust
Walbro Fuel Pump
Upgrared wrx injectors
Big AL MAF
UR Cold Air Intake
The Shop mini battery kit

The car runs amazing with those tall gears of the 2007 and with the new dealer upgraded reflash rom there is no hesitation or other problem

The car is headed out to Raceway Park this weekend for the Import Survival Series to see what it can do then next week we are doing the TGV's and some other mods

This dyno sheet is just over 20 psi on pump and just obver 26 psi on race fuel - same reflash tune for both

Decent results for a mild tune

NOTE - I really dont care for the Perrin set up with the outdated back housing but it seemed to run ok here

Any flashing problems? Though I haven't paid enough attention, there were stories that the new dealer 07 "fix" reflash "locked" the ECU somehow so reflashing was not possible. False story or Ecutek workaround?

There was no "lock"... the new ROM just wasn't mapped out.

al, how are you controlling boost?

if it's oem ecu, how are you getting it to properly read 26psig?

is there an upgraded MAP sensor on the car?

thanks,

The car uses Ecutek

BTW - Access Port is comming out with the pro tuner for 07 STI in a few days

The car uses a MBC

The ecu does not read over 22 psi

PS - we used the newest SOA delaler ROM which eliminates the "hesitation" problem - the car ran very smoothly

What is dual stage ECUtek? Have they finally added map switching?

Its either easy ecu ( idk if its available for the 07's yet) or just the defrost button + WOT = boost map switch. I willing to bet its the latter of the two...then again i dont know how it would work with a mbc...

It bewilders me that Jimmy got another car...hes got so many: built block c6 zo6, r33 skyline, now a 07 sti! (im sure there are others on the list)

Dual stage mapping is a band aide approach to race gas tuning I have been doing with success on my Evo tunes for some time now

In cases where the pump gas map runs through the center sections of the fuel map it is possible to map the high boost load cells for race gas with leaner and more agressive mapping. I have found it to be very effective.

However, you must have a good handle on the boost - best to use a EBC with a active warning

as over boosting with pump gas is very dangerous

Easy ECU is another option from ECUTEK which gives you a flashing cable and you can load in seperate pump and race maps along with a world class data logger and road dyno testing function and cel checker - its a great choice also

This car just had one map for now

Sounds like turning up the boost forces the ECU to use higher load fuel map. So by turning up the boost he will use the fuel map that is meant for race gas. Turn up the boost and have pump gas in there.. BOOM.. =P

how are you changing between the race gas tune and pump gas tune? Are you just turning up the boost by the boost controller or switching boost maps via defrost button?

Purely curious, do you think it would make more power if there were some more miles on the motor to help loosen things up a bit.

Perhaps - but we all know that hard core guys take the brand new motors and break them in on the dyno

The main difference with the 07 car is in the improved gear ratios in the trans and improved synchros which make the shifting better - other wise its nearly identical to a 06

I was really shocked how this car behaved on the road comapred to my current and old STI's which are more closed ratio fast shifting - this 07 gearing gives the car a lot of time to load up the boost and hold the gear, much better suited to a road going car as opposed to an off road rally car which the original gears were more suited for

I am hoping and praying that my swap of these 07 gears into my 05 goes smoothly - we are awaiting some bits which are on back order

This is something I've always wondered. STI's stock have such a broad powerband, let alone moded on the vf39, why did subaru use such short gearing? I would prefer long gears with short spacing between them. I am starting to regret getting my 06 left over...

Definatly let us know the deal with the 07 gearing into the 06, as its something I think would be very worthwile

Al..

I just read the latest Turbo Magazine and there was a spread on the EVO MR that you guys tuned. The article said the EVO was putting down 505whp & 4XXwtq on a 2.3 stroker kit. To me that seems like a lot of engine work for a EVO and only to put down those kind of numbers.

Now the 07 STI you guys have (stated in this thread) is putting down 505WHP and gobs of torque for a stock block. Is it that the 07 STI ecu and new head design is now far superior? Or is the EVO in the article not showing it's full potential.

That is defenitely NOT the limit of a stroked 2.3 on an Evo. No matter what dyno you run on that set-up has a lot more in it. Maybe the turbo on it doesn't have more to give...

Few customers appreciate that "building" a motor does not add any power - it merely makes the internals stronger so you can make more power in a reliable manner

On an evo head work does very little

I think the customer you referenced wanted a ultra reliable road racing and street set up and was not into agressive tunes

I made over 800 whp on a 2.3L and then I went back to 2.0 L and I am over 900 whp now on my Evo

The power is all in turbo selection and fuel

a lot of work is involved its ripping open the gearbox and replacing all the internals....or just buy an 07 box and swap yours out and sell it to me for cheap :)

the perrin rotated kit is garret style but the exhaust housing necks down to 2.5 then opens to 3" immediately after but that temporary neck is bad for flow and restrictive, hence why he feels it is outdated and a bad performer whereas the UR kit is 3" all the way....also there is complaints about the perrin kits mounting angle and it leading to some sort of oiling issues last time i read about it....
