So i'm doing this swap.. just looking for people who have wrx swaped a wagon... and of those people that did it themselves..

howd it go..??

i'm working on this swap.. gotta wait until i heal from knee surgery to actualy start it but i'm routing through the wiring now...

tell me guys, what kinda problems did u run into that i can hopefully avoid

really depends on how well you are with the mechanics and more importantly how well u can read wiring diagrams and any experience with wiring at all...

I can read the diagrams fine... i've had plenty of experience with them through school and work.. as far as the actual mechanical end.. as far as i understand... puting the motor in isn't a huge ordeal (as far as making everything fit).... with the wiring so far, it seems like this... keep it simple and it doesnt seem to horrible.. just double check everything i guess and make sure things that get power and getting the right power and same for grounds... what scares me is when you start looking into it too deeply and you see how everythig is soo tied together... it just makes me thing oh man this is never going to work lol...

how did you feel the wiring was or have you not done this?

I hear you can send the wiring out and have it done but that costs $$ lol

Yea, thats what the guy i picked up my motor from said.... personaly.. i wanna do it myself, for two reasons.. i know i can do it... and to be able to say... hey yea i did all this MY SELF lol

personal reasons i guess

if u have experience with wiring it's easy..just a few power wires, and then the signals to the cluster, odb2 port & flashing stuff, fuel tank emissions, ac, fuel pump controller wiring(just power and ground) and that's it i believe...you don't have to worry about ground since the ecu is grounded to the engine...

biggest pain is taking the engine harness out of the wrx harness more then the actual combining of the 2...

i did my own swap(sedan) but would like to give a heads up.

if you get an STi swap with rear wiper it will work for a wagon(since they have the same rear wiper, control, etc) with no glitches whatsoever! that is good new to me as im into wagons, and will swap my 98 OBS soon. just a hint!

As in removing it from thw WRX? i picked up the motor from some one who had pulled the motor and pretty much the entire wiring harness for the car.. so i have it all... as far as check engine lights... did you have any? being that is ODDII i cant have one in order to pass my emissions in pa... now if it was obdI wen writing the sticker i can just not see the light on lol but any how....

one thing my dad pointed out was my obs doesnt have a fuel temp sensor. where as the wrx does.... what did you do about that.. i was just thinking of puting a resistor in so it reads a semi normal temp all the time

It sounds to me like you have a pretty good idea what you're getting into. Do it. Shoot me a PM if you get stuck with the wiring.

Im doing a 03 WRX into a 95 coupe, im putting everything from the WRX in it including ALL of the wiring, gastank, and dash. All the mecanical parts are easy (besides the gastank, somewhat comfusing) Everything pretty much bolts up, except for the 03 condenser. The hardest parts are getting the 03 Heater core to fit (firewall fab) and fabbing the dash in, which i have done most of, but i havent completed cutting eveything to get the center councel in. Im ganna wait untill the car runs and drives.

Oh BTW i have never done anything to my car before but change the oil. so i had zero experience when i started. I am very mechanicly inclined.

To any of you that have done these swaps... did you get a check engine light when done? if so what were the codes, i just wanna try to avoid getting any, being that i'm obdII and i need to be clean for emissions

dont mean to be rude and de-rail your thread but what are you doing about exhaust? you getting a turbo x-member or getting custom pipes/ trimming existing xmember??

If you do it properly, you won't get a CEL. We did have some niggling little issues with the gas tank and getting the level gauge to work properly. But beyond that, it went off without a hitch. It's not that hard if you take your time. Just don't have a due date and a need to have the car available or you will lose your mind. The first swap I did I took a 3 month break in the middle because I was tired of wrenching and it was the dead of summer. But it just didn't matter.

The 2nd one I did was on a friend's RS and he had to have the car back because he was driving a rental. We completed it in 12 days with both of us working 50 hour weeks at our day jobs and just working on the swap evenings and weekends. By the 2nd Sunday night when it wasn't quite done and he had to have it running the next morning, we were ready to kill each other, and I was ready to tell him to trailer his car out of my garage and never come back. We got past it and it's alive and kicking to this day...

I believe east coast swapper offers a service were they'll just take care of the wiring. Might be worth investigating.
Its worth looking at the web site for the info on it.

wanna do the wiring swap myself because i can..

but any who, yea thats where i was lookin at getting a CEL... is with the gas tank.. i know one thing is the fuel temp sensor, and i think there may be a pressure sensor too.. idk i didn't look at that part yet...

how about the VSS... mine in my obs is only two wire where as the wrx has a 3 wire.. i did look and the signal wire to the cluster also is the ground on my car where as the wrx has a power, a ground and a signal...

any thoughts

im in the same boat

but i discovered the FMIC will be cheaper then getting a hood :( i really wanted a rs/obs hood too!

hoods arent too bad priced. I got mine for 50 bucks!! but i got lucky. you can get a V3 hood that will fit the 96 for under 300.
