View Full Version : ABS delete
GripGC8 03-17-2007, 07:51 PM does anyone know which model 93-01 impreza L had no ABS?
or can anyone tell me how they deleted ABS in thier factory ABS equipped GC?
im working on shaving my engine bay and i need to get rid of ABS
igoreka 03-17-2007, 11:22 PM I did this, it's pretty hard and time consuming.
First I got all the parts from Junk yard, all the lines (here you can practice how to take them out in one peice, I used like four different cars), new reservuar and cylinder, new ratio cylinder (whatever its called, black little thing)
You gotta have all four lines changed: 2 to wheels and 2 to the ratio cylinder, you can't really use any from the once you have, except the once that go to the rear wheels from ratio cylinder, don't touch those.
The easy part is to remove them from the car, you can bent them but putting another pair is tricky and you have to remove everything you can what's on your way, I can't remember if I had to remove my A/C line.
Another thing is get your self a really good ranch for brake lines, will save time.
As far as electrical I don't know my harness is RA, and had no ABS originally
I hope that helps, I better not spend 5 minutes writing this for nothing, :) good luck
what in the world is so important that you need to take out the ABS?? Unless you are driving in deep gravel or deep snow, w/o ABS you will stop longer and lack control in avoidance situations. Not the best idea when you are adding 100+hp IMHO.

STi_VIII 03-18-2007, 02:33 AM The guys at Sport Compact Car have proven that ABS does not always mean a shorter stopping distance. Using logic, it is easy to see why ABS will not stop a vehicle as quickly as possible. Most ABS systems work by modulating the brake pressure around a programmed value. A perceptive driver can maintain the brake pressure closer to the best value. ABS does do a more consistent job most of the time, though. It also makes for a safer vehicle in emergency "panic" stops because the average driver would just stab the brakes instead of a more appropriate brake pressure. Obviously, better ABS does a better job than older systems. Think of ABS like a shotgun. If you can't aim too well, a shotgun is better.
the 00/01RS abs unlike the gda is VERY VERY good
even on snow. its still 2 channel but still a really good system
problem is most people are not good enough drives.
for abs to be advantageous you have to not straight arm panic stop but steer around the problem with the brakes flored
kheff46 03-18-2007, 12:43 PM ABS= better for soccer moms(or non driver types in general). my STi swapped L has no ABS(it's wired and mechanically there, but my chassis was non ABS so i left it) and i like it bettr than my OBS with ABS.

How is the 00/01 system different from the 98/99?
I've always been curious: does the programming in the pump or the ecu have a greater impact on how effective the system is?

hmm yeah......ok. I guess that means every single race team runs without ABS?
I have raced rally-x enough to know that ABS off is simply slower every single time (having tried both over the past several years). I have run my mr2 (no ABS available) on the track. Even with fairly good threshold braking skills, I still have to leave a little more margin for lock up than if I had ABS. The notion that it's not advantagious for any kind of serious driving is just silly.

civic2scooby 03-18-2007, 02:27 PM I don't think its a debate over teh functionality of ABS, its just that the ABS on the GC bodied preza's sucks. I can't tell you how many times my ABS sensor has mistaken a bump for a lockup and I almost blew into the back of a soccer mom because it totally dropped my pedal out from under my foot. A well tuned ABS system is great, but the older **** is more of a hassle than a help.
GripGC8 03-18-2007, 02:38 PM i didnt ask what everyone thinks of 00-01 abs systems...if you like it in your car thats fine...im taking it out of my car.
i have my own brake lines i can bend..i just need to know what parts i need to source that are non abs.
so far i know i need a prop valve, master cylinder, and brake booster from a non-ABS impreza L..anything else?
thank you

don't be gay! if it weren't truly useful, they'd delete it and save weight like anyone with some common sense! of course it helps, but has been proven to be a wash in SOME circumstances for some types of drivers. not all drivers are created equal obviously!
and nowhere did i say it's not advantageous(mine is correct spelling), you assumed that.

FYI. my whole system is ABS parts, just not working like ABS. if it helps you out any!

mxpunk 03-18-2007, 08:35 PM are the weight savings worth it? wouldnt it be easier just to pop the fuse?
i think i might do this on my obs, i had ABS. my brighton doesnt have it and it stops pretty good, but not as good as my all wheel disc equipped wagon

Keith,
I was responding this comment:
"ABS= better for soccer moms(or non driver types in general). "
You seem to suggest ABS is not a braking performance enhancer. You didn't elaborate much past this so perhaps I missed your point. Oh and I'll send you a cookie for winning the spelling bee (and you tell me not to be gay...harhar) :)
Grip:
Without debating the effectiveness of the ABS system, let me try again. What are you trying to fit under you hood that you need to remove the ABS pump for? It's seems like, if nothing else a HUGE hassle and maybe there is a way to fit what you are trying squeeze in there in a different way?

Wow no info on this thread at all. Any way all you need is two brake line T's You cna like me steal them off of a non abs japanesse car. Toyotas and Nissans work great. My car was origanally a non ABS car but when I went Brembos and STI master cylinder I got rid of the hill holder crap so i had to do this. It is really easy but would be easier to do on ABS equiped car.
All of the lines run to the ABS unit. 2 lines un and four out. I was told to set up the brake lines in an X direction, meaning front left to back right and front right to back left. So that is how I set them up and have been running no ABS Brembos for a year and a half now. They brake great! great response great feel. It actually takes a lot of work to get them to lock up. you need to really hammer on them in the wet. If you have good tires and brakes then I wouldn't worry about it unless you like to panic a lot.
Hope this actually helps!:)
nme187 03-19-2007, 12:46 PM Pull the fuse =P ftw
I want to remove mine since now I have the damn ABS light on, but Id rather have the light then ABS...
johnkaldar 03-19-2007, 04:10 PM This doesn't answer what parts to order, but I vote for running new lines with proportion valves for each corner!
GripGC8 03-19-2007, 06:15 PM some good info....still not sure as to the simple'st way to do this.
im not trying to fit somthing under my hood...im trying to get rid of useless things under my hood.
ABS is just an aid for stopping and i dont need an aid.

He mentioned that he's cleaning up his engine bay. I've been thinking the same thing, as the unit has a jungle of lines coming out of it, with rusted fittings and all.
Instead of going through the hassle of remvoing the ABS, I'm just going to make a fiberglass cover for it. I would suggest that Grip consider doing something similar.
LegacyWRX 03-19-2007, 10:18 PM Is it as easy as pulling a fuse? Would I just be able to put it in when i want abs? It's cool, but annoying. I would like to be able to just pop in a fuse when it snows.
Hurley 2.5 WRS 03-20-2007, 02:54 AM are you joking? 00-01 abs sucks balls. hard. even with featherlight pressure on (considerably slick) ice, it would stop tens of feet further than a properly removed ABS car. mine used to have it.

i dont know if the impreza L master is a 3 or 4 port, butif it matters to you, heres a few things to know:
early 90s legacys have the same brake lines in them. they are more abundant in the junkyards as well. there are 2 types of non-abs in them that ive seen, a 4 port and a 3 port.wh ichever you get, get it all, itll be easier. oh, and its WAY easier to pull/instal with the motor out, so look for a car in the J yard without a motor, youll thank yourself when you put them in.

Yah I've seen people hook a switch up to the abs fuse so when you want it BAM! Only downside to having it off is the ABS light; I'd have that light either way since one of my ABS sensors is all fugged up =( ftl(cant find which one....)

t3hWIT 03-20-2007, 03:24 PM In my car, if you hit the brake and gas pedal at the same time, the ABS light comes on and you no longer have antilock brakes.
Turn the car off and back on, and everything's fine. :)
Ryobob 03-20-2007, 10:38 PM u wanna delete abs?
t3hWIT 03-21-2007, 12:12 AM u wanna delete abs?
Arctic Assassian 03-21-2007, 03:58 AM I vote for ditch the weak ass -01 setup and get a set of four pistons from a wrx or a brembo setup. Pull the master cylynder pedal assembly and follow the lines back and pull everything that you find back to the friggn brakes. Then match all that crap up with the parts on your car and start switching. As you come across problems, post pics and people will help instead of bitching.

Brydon,
Can you elaborate on what you did to delete your ABS system? I am very interested in doing this soon but I'm just not sure what to connect to what and how. I assume those "tees" you mention go in where the ABS currently is to split the flow. Could you do that and split it front/rear instead of cross left/right?.
Any pics?
kris GC8 04-08-2007, 05:52 AM in the uk we usually get rid of it cos its crap and increases the stopping distance
mainly applys to the classic models....

good thing this was bumped I forgot about it! I have no pics of mine but I might take some tomorrow. Mine was originally non ABS with a Hill-holder. Now it is STI master with brembos and no ABS.
Here is a diagram ignore the RHD stuff but it's all the same thing. This is basically my setup. If you want a cleaner look find a non ABS car the lines are shorter:

Hey Chris,
I am a Manc now living in Detroit. I was back two weeks ago and am missing driving there dearly. Where do you live?
Go drive over the Snake for me.
limeylight 04-08-2007, 10:11 AM Thanks Brydon. That's not what I would have expected but.....
Is that the oem propotioning valve?

It depends on your setup. Use the propotioning valve that is made for the brakes you use. So if you have brembos, use the STI valve. Remember if you are doing all of this as an upgrade like I did make sure not to use say a drum brake proportioning valve with disk brakes. It gives bad braking feel and unexpected late braking characteristics. Since my mission for my car has always been race: I never cared about ABS, Bumper beams, Spare tire, Airbags, etc... It's all just weight
