View Full Version : got tuned today...
Auto0utcast 03-17-2007, 10:55 PM ok so i went to international motorsports today in clifton, nj as part of a dyno day there with a friend of mine and a few guys from evoM forums... now im going to preface this by saying that they use a mustang dyno... this thing aint called the heartbreaker for nothin... oh my god... first guy on the rollers with his 06 evoIX... full turbo back, intake, electronic boost controller, etc... baselined @ 172hp and 177 tq....i nearly **** a brick. all tuning was by jestr tuning by the way.. after the tune he ended up with 210hp and 213 tq (open source)...i use this as a preface...
my car hit the rollers third out of 4 cars... (2 regular evo 9's and my buddys evo 9 MR)... i got on the rollers and did a baseline pull with the map loaded in my accessport. 186hp, 186 tq... but the air/fuel was WAY out of whack.... we then unmarried the accessport and ran a baseline with NO EM and put down 166hp and 172tq. he proceeds to then tune the car using open source and gets the hp back up to 188 and tq to 184, but air fuel is still nuts and the car the entire time would not boost past 16.82psi.. its believed i have a boost leak of some sort but we were unable to pin point it while i was on the rollers... as far as my power making mods go i have a helix catless dp on the car, the buschur 3" catback with bullet muffler and a k&n drop in filter with the snorkel deleted. the dyno shop owner told us that if we wanted to get in a pissing match that hes found the correction factor for his dyno to read similar to dynojets was 55%!  ....which would put me at 291hp and 285tq...at 16.8 psi....27 degrees total timing and a 10.7 AFR @ WOT.... im disappointed in the numbers but i found an issue with my car that needs to be resolved before i go modding it any further which is a good thing i guess. tons of thanks go to jestr@jestrtuning.com . hell of a guy and very honest with you every step of the way. showed me everything he was doing as he did it and explained why he was doing it. now to get this boost issue remedied before the tracks open...ohhh.. btw my friend with the evo MR.... was there to tune his new water/meth setup... 55%water - 45% meth. put down 234hp and 256tq on 31psi on the stock turbo!!!!! with an 11.8 afr....not bad when that calculates out to 395tq and 361hp
waktasz 03-17-2007, 11:02 PM Any idea what your MAF g/s maxed out at?
Auto0utcast 03-17-2007, 11:05 PM unfortunately thats one question i cant answer.. i truly dont know.

You are welome to come by anytime and we can data log your maf g's and other data free of any charge and report to you what ever data you may be interested in
Also - I would be happy to place your car on another dyno so you can see a comparitive figure - again free of charge
Auto0utcast 03-17-2007, 11:34 PM thank you very much. i am curious to see whats going on there and to see what she'd read on another dyno. when will you be back in CT?
Dyno Flash 03-17-2007, 11:43 PM thank you very much. i am curious to see whats going on there and to see what she'd read on another dyno. when will you be back in CT?
I am going to be in The Shop - www.theshop.com this Monday - Saturday 10 am to 10 pm
I am really curious as my friend Sean ivey had previously tuned many Evos there which made similar power to that of the Buschur racing mustang dyno which also uses the stock mustang correction factor - the numbers at Buscur are much closer to 280 for a car like yours
You can throw the car on our dyno for a free pull and compare
Auto0utcast 03-17-2007, 11:53 PM thank you very much Al.. i will definitely take you up on that offer for the pull, but i think theres still something screwwy going on with the boost issue... 16.82psi is all she would do in 4th gear ... although on my drive home tonight i saw 19-20 psi in 5th-6th gear pulls... any ideas?

Usually on the STi's I prefer to swap the boost pill for a smaller pill and remap the boost tables which will get you a more consistant boost in each gear usually.
Boost creep in the higher gears is a common situation.
This is one of the reasons why we tune the STI's in 4th on the dyno and then take them on the road for a careful road test to adjust the boost mapping on the highway in 5th and 6th.
Ideally, you would hope that a dyno would be dead accurate to real world conditions, however, the reality is that often dynos can and will vary slightly from the loading you see on the road, partricularly on higher gears where there is significant wind resisitance. Each dyno has its own loading and they are not all the same. This is why I loath to tune on strange dynos which can require a significant learning curve and time invested with the individual machine to become familar with how it loads.
As a Cobb Pro Tuner, I have tuned many, many STI's with Cobb base maps - I usually can make a solid 15 - 25 whp and TQ gains over those maps as they are super safe and conservative base maps. I find it bizzare that is the a/f was "way off" on your Cobb base map that you did not pick up any power with a custom dyno tune - something is wrong. A boost leak or condition takes 20 minutes to diagnose and correct on a Subaru so unless your turbo is shot or your engine has a weak cylinder something is way out of wack.
06blksubwrx 03-18-2007, 02:45 AM I also have been tuned by Jestr here in FL, he's a great guy and does great work. I unmarried my Cobb AP, then sold the AP + ST, used the money for a meth injection kit and to get tuned OPEN SOURCE by Jestr (friends and family deal). Best thing iv'e done for the car. Anyone interested in getting tuned (Open source, street tuner, or utec) in FL drop me a PM for the "friends and family deal".
Auto0utcast 03-21-2007, 04:20 PM well.. just to confirm what you suggested previously AL, the vf-39 on my car basically puked on me yesterday. it sounds like metal on metal contact comming from it under any load whatsoever and it feels as if something is binding in there. i have since ordered a TD06H FP Green with 3" inlet and 8cm exhaust housing, PE Enterprises 850cc injectors, Perrin 3" turbo inlet tube and Walbro 255lph fuel pump. before everything is installed and tuned its going to a local shop to do a full pressure test on the system and then we will be getting it re-dyno'd and get the AFR and such worked out. another local STi put down 450hp and 493tq on 29psi with meth on the 2.4 inlet and 7cm green on a dynojet...im stoked to see what the results could be

It is always a good idea to choose a tuner who has a lot of Subaru specific experience to identify problems like a turbo failure when its on the dyno
Trying to tune a car with a blown turbo is like beating a dead horse - a good tuner knows where the horse is dead

Glad it did not take out your motor
Al
T3RMIN4L 03-21-2007, 07:49 PM Al, you a funny guy. OP sorry to hear about your turbo pooing itself. GL with the green and be sure to post updates when its done.

The turbo didn't blow when on the dyno and wasn't tuned with a blown turbo.
Auto0utcast 03-22-2007, 12:12 PM the turbo was not building the appropriate amount of boost while on the dyno thus it was theoretically toast then.
aps2fast4u 03-22-2007, 12:52 PM Bummer man, sorry to hear about your loss. Time is the best healer in the loss of a family member, especially the time when you get your new turbo!!
Lol, hope your new setup works out for you.
Auto0utcast 03-22-2007, 01:08 PM oh im sure the new setup is going to make me a VERY happy individual
