View Full Version : Suby - but VW Sexy!!!
azscooby 03-18-2007, 12:02 AM I can't stand green gauges, so after reading eight thousand threads and getting a hold of Mechie3, I found a solution. Didn't really take that much time, and the results are just incredible. It actually turned out better than I hoped.

They actually look better than that in real life, much deeper VW blue. I just need to fix/tweak a few areas and I'll be very happy!!!
Thanks for lookin'
SubeSTIle 03-18-2007, 12:54 AM nice man, how did you end up doing it?
Mechie3 03-18-2007, 12:56 AM Which gels did you end up using? The darker rosco 79, or the lighter 68's That's an awesome pic by the way. Every pic I ever tried to take came out all blurred and bad looking.
azscooby 03-18-2007, 01:01 AM SubeSTIle -
I used the stage gels and LED prewireds from Mechie3 -which I recommend +10000. Great job on the LED circuitry, I could never have put something together that nice.
Mechie - I used the darker blue ones, not the ones for the Prosport gauges, which ever that one is.
It took a little manuvering, and some photoshop, to get it just right. But with the required long exposure time you have to be really still, so I braced the camara next to the wheel, and did an remote/auto snap, so I wouldn't have to depress the button and move the camara.
Thanks again man, really turned out nicely. Now I have to VW's!!
VSB XT 03-18-2007, 01:03 AM To make it even more "VW" you need a check engine light!:p
azscooby 03-18-2007, 01:03 AM I'm going to put some red over the X1000RPM, and the IMPREZA lettering, should look good.
azscooby 03-18-2007, 01:04 AM VSB -
that's funny, and true - -1000 for VW reliability. That's why I bought the extended warranty with my '06 jetta (wifes actually -she loves it.) But so far, 15K miles, no problems, just regular maintence.
Mechie3 03-18-2007, 01:27 AM I'm going to put some red over the X1000RPM, and the IMPREZA lettering, should look good.
Did I send you two different reds? If so, use the darker one (24, not 324). I used the 324 on dyingsubconsious' gauges and they looked good, but weren't quite as dark as the needles.
Yeah, I don't have a fancy camera. Wait, I don't have a camera! I borrowed my brothers once, but it's a simple point and shoot. No long exposure bells and whistles here
azscooby 03-18-2007, 03:00 AM Yep, you sent me two reds and I think I used the darker one, at least I meant to. They are very similar in color (needles and redline) but the photo doesn't really show it.
My camera isn't anything special either, Nikon Coolpix 5200 - just learned a few tricks photographing my saltwater reef tank (my old addiction.)
Evil_STI 03-18-2007, 03:38 AM I did mine last week...I like how they turned out...
racingfish 03-18-2007, 12:18 PM a little off topic but hell most of my posts are... Check out the 07 lgts dash.... freakin nice.. i was checking 5 of them in yesterday and was amazed how nice they looked... everyone likes how my gauges look but i look at the new ones and it makes my gauges look like something from the 70's pinto era

made some tweaks and it looks gooood. I made the x1000rpm and Impreza red, and got rid of the hotspotting on the odo.
I like.
Mechie3 03-19-2007, 01:04 PM To fix the hotspotting, did you just back up the led like I had suggested, or did you also touch up the "frosting"? That's almost what I did for another member last weekend except I made his fuel/coolant symbols red as well as the red dash near the H. For anyone who does this, don't bother with the red dash. It took me about an hour just to get that one dumb part to come out. I just left mine like AZ did as well.
azscooby 03-19-2007, 02:44 PM Hey Mechie,
Yes I backed out the LED, actually I used two, since your wiring included two led's, one for each display (04 only has one.)
I also cut a very small piece of stage gel and wedged it in before the led's, worked better for color uniformity than hotspotting.
I was wondering about that little red dash at the coolant, it was my next tweak, but it looked fairly daunting, so maybe I'll hold off. But it would really finish it up nicely.
WgnWheel 03-19-2007, 02:53 PM wow, that looks great! awesome job.
Mechie3 03-19-2007, 06:09 PM The problem with the red das is that light tends to leak through where you have a junction between red and blue gels (or any junction really). You can't really overlap there as the lines are so close. I did it, but it took quite a while. On my own gauges I left it. It bothered me at first, but now I'm fine with it.
shemoves 03-19-2007, 06:32 PM looks slick. good work.
