View Full Version : Buschur Racing Stg. 2 and tune on a 2007 STI

Parts: Went to Buschur's Friday AM where they removed the SPT Stg 1 (cat back, intake, heat shield) and installed a wrapped uppipe (2.25” stainless), TBE (3” w/HFC, wrapped downpipe), (http://picasaweb.google.com/doctorx/Buschur/photo#5043003686711943538)CAI (http://picasaweb.google.com/doctorx/Buschur/photo#5043003703891812738), light weight battery (http://picasaweb.google.com/doctorx/Buschur/photo#5043003665237107026), and a modified Walbro pump (greater flow than the 255). The pump is not part of the Stg. 2 but I didn't want to run out of juice. The 07 STI that went the following day ran 100% at the injectors so sounds like it was the right call. I'll see if I can get the duty cycle info and add it here.

Dyno: Spent over 2 hours on the dyno. Very first pull the car made made 265 whp, I was surprised. I regret not having a baseline pull (pre-install) but the installs had to get underway early. Anyway, Al tuned the car with Ecutek and ended up making 281 whp and 305 tq on 93 octane gas. Importantly, the tune is very conservative and tq comes on early (280 ft lbs by 3500 rpm). AFR's were solid at around 10.8, boost max'd at 20 psi. I'll get the sheet in here when I get it scanned.

Street: This thing is a torque monster! I wasn't expecting this much improvement. It pulls like a 911 Turbo. Power is early and very smooth. The car is louder than the SPT, obviously, but I'll get used to it. Overall, I'm very impressed with the result and highly recommend this package. David Buschur has a very nice shop and is a good guy (I asked him to re-rack my car minutes before going on the dyno). Al did a great job and made sure I was happy with the car. Can't wait to get this thing out for autox.

that is great power. that dyno with those numbers makes you know it really is running hard! Al makes these cars fun to drive, not lame like SOA made them

Very cool post, love the links to the parts. Thank you. If you get a second would you mind PM'ing me with the shifter parts you bought. You told me but my memory sucks. The shifter in your car is the best I have felt in a Subaru, ever.

Thanks for the post. Thanks for buying from us.

So funny thing about the shifter... It's just a Subaru short throw with a titanium doorknob on the end. However, my reverse lockout cable was messed up by the dealer when they installed the SPT catback. The right-side limit was blown and shifting 4-5 was horrible. Brought it back to them and they adjusted the cable very carefully and since it's been a dream. Even better than before they messed it up and way better than the Subaru short throw on my '04 STi. I may be crazy but the shifter went from good, to crap, to great because of the reverse lockout cable. I've heard that precise cable length is important, at least according to my wife. Of course this shouldn't matter on the left side of the gearbox. Maybe it's a change between MY04 and MY07. Man, do I love the '07 gearbox...

Close as I'm gonna get. Yes, I've driven a turbo now and then. In fact a fellow in a Ruff 930 spent 20 minutes trying (in vain) to ditch me during a road rally on the back-country roads of central Kentucky. I got very used to the sound of his rev limiter. In his defense, his car was at least 10 years old and it's harder to lead than follow. I guess what I'm saying is, aside from the late model turbo that makes over 500 whp at idle, yes, I believe this car pulls damn near as hard as the turbos I've driven. The only way I'm going to be convinced otherwise is for someone with a turbo to step up and let me compare the two. Anyone? I'll buy lunch... Crickets...

500whp at idle  that's some serious tq!
i've raced a turbo or two in my day, at 300 whp we can kinda keep up with them... but once you're past say eighty or so it's bye bye suby

An 18+ year old 930 Turbo would not stand a chance against a 993TT, 996TT, and 997TT, unless it was a Ruf "yellowbird". I have ran against 996TT's and they pull much harder than us with stock turbo's.

Glad to hear you finally made it off the dyno on Friday and ended up with a great tune. On Sat I made 222/281 with the 07 WRX stage 2 setup. Really love the seemingly endless torque.

Well said... This point was made clear during the Gumball 3000. The DC Shoe STi's would swarm around the exotics until they got going then... dust...

Pretty crazy you liked the Suby Short throw shifter. I was planning on going kartboy sts and bushings on a 07 WRX but now hearing from an evo guy, thats a pretty good endorsement. HMM... Maybe David just hasn't driven any other short thrown suby tranny's, as hes new to the Subaru community. wonder if there is a difference with the actual sts for 07 not the tranny.

Nice numbers by the way.

I'm guessing David hasn't driven a Scooby short throw in while. For my $ I'd do the kartboy, nice... What about the COBB adjustable height unit? Not as prevalent at the kartboy but I like the idea of a lower shifter.

So if i never dyno'd the wrx at stage four is it bad that Im pulling with and then away from 911 turbo's? The car was protuned on the street because the tuner doesnt use a dyno. So I guess i will never know what kinda power i was making. Oh well. It happens. Fastest I ever had it out to was estimated 155 bcause spdo stops at 140. But i still had 1000RPM's to go and the car was still pulling at what we estimated to be around 155.

Hey Gene,

Which version of the exhaust are you running?? Is it catted or non-catted and which muffler are you using the bullet or the quiet one?? Any info you have would be great! I have an 06 wagon and want a somewhat quiet exhaust that will not droan in the expanses of the wagon.

Thanks Dennis

I believe the kartBoy also lowers it about an inch lower also? Not positive

I'm running the catted pipe with the bullet muffler. It's loud so if noise is a concern I would HIGHLY recommend to quiet muffler. People are making good power with the quiet muffler. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

David was pretty stoked about the shifter after he drove my car so I think you are correct. Here is my post (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1210181) detailing the mods to it. Neither David or Al liked the extra noise it transmits into the cabin and it's starting to grate on me a bit. I'm going to have Clint @ TiC drive it to see if the noise is normal.

As for the 911 Turbo discussion, I have driven a 993TT extensively and my car would give it some real heartburn after this weekend's tune. :)

Good numbers on the tune GeneJock! Let's get together and swap cars to see how they compare.

The KB lowers about an inch off of the SPT short throw: I've had both. Can't speak on the cobb unit.

Did the KB noise up the cabin?
