View Full Version : blew something up, the new build begins

long story short: i STILL dont know what i broke yet. i'm going to autozone tomorrow to see if they have a leakdown tester. my gut instinct tells me headgasket, and thats what im hoping for.

assuming the 2.0 block is still good, i'll be throwing a set of crower stg.2's in there, probably run the stock valvetrain (budget limited, might do springs, but the car NEVER sees revs above ~ 6800, so stockers should suffice).

ordering a timing belt tomorrow, gasket kit as soon as i pull the heads and see what i broke.

i'll try to keep this thread up to date with some of my pictures (sorry, it was only me when i stripped the block to prep for the pull, so no pics of me "accidentally" discharging my AC.

for whatever reason, remote linking doesnt work on all the pics, but links do work.

how did you break it?

still not 100% sure. i think i screwed up the injector scale calculation. i was running between 12.5:1 - 15.4:1 (WB02). the loud bang i heard was an intercooler pipe blowing off a coupler....but i still lost all my coolant, and the seam between the head and block on the drivers side (where the sprayed coolant was) is/was wet.

im off tues and wed.....so i'll be pulling the heads off tomorrow after i do a leakdown test.

wow, that is really lean. I really hope for the best, but I am not optimistic about it.

12.5:1 isnt too bad.

the 15.5:1 was @ idle. couldnt get it much richer than that without the engine starting to stumble.

either way, i literally drove the car for ~ 2 or 3 minutes before i heard the bang (IC pipe), then found the super-low coolant, then saw the spray. i still dont know why exact order of things happening.

bought a compression tester. NO one locally sells a leakdown, so i'll have to live without the gauges, and just put 125psi in the line (behind a checkvalve, of course), and listen for a hiss. wont know HOW much im losing, but ill know if im losing it.

pulled the plugs. pics below

passenger side plugs look VERY good. brownish tinge to them. no deposits, no coking. smells normal
drivers side plugs dont look quite as nice. VERY light deposits, almost completely black. smells burnt :(

update: leaking BADLY past the rings in cylinder 1. appears to be a ringland. how odd, i blew the piston farthest from the knock sensor? piston is coked to death, although NO scoring whatsoever. luckily it died before it caused any damage. the block seems to be 100% intact. heads are undamaged.

currently debating the pricing between a built 2.0 and a jdm v.8 shortblock

The link I pm'd you is the same block sitting at his shop waiting for a new home. :p

exhaust ports on drivers side head, notice the massive oil stains in cyl #1

http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q132/JasperSTi/motor%20teardown/ex_ports.jpg

horrible coking on the piston in cyl #1, although the block itself appears undamaged. not taking the chance. its either being given to my girlfriend to play with (she has a 99RS and desperately wants to do a swap), or getting scrapped for the weight in aluminum.

Btw, it's not just any old vers8 shortblock, it's a Spec C block. You can tell by the crank and it's the nice one.

It's going out in the morning.

Good luck with the assembly and if you need any help, I'm just a phone call away.

Thanks again,
Ron

got the right valve spring compressor today, and a badass little tool my buddy steve had made for making the job of removing the valve keepers significantly easier.

What a waste!
8000 rpm and the VF30????

You need to go bigger!

A 20G or Green would be fun on this setup.

you wanna donate a clipped td05-20g or a green/sz49 for my cause? cause the motor/cams/headwork/misc parts have set me back on a new turbo till at least next summer :(

I totally understand the monetary issue. I'd love to donate a turbo if I could afford it ;) This setup looks to have a good amount of potential and I just haven't been impressed with any VF series setup. They run out of steam so quickly.
Maybe you can find a good deal on a used turbo.

i suck @ taking pictures when im working.

heads are done. new valveguide seals are in, valves are lapped/seated, and heads are reassembled. (wed)

shortblock is completely reassembled (thurs)

took friday off.

today, completely assembled the longblock. PE Timing belt = huge PITA, but its on and timing marks are perfect. flywheels back on, clutch will go on right before i drop the motor back in (wont fit on the stand w/ a clutch). AC compressor is bolted back on, gotta see if i can find a new drier (old one was exposed to air, probably junk now)...probably have the dealership do a complete purge/recharge, depending on $$. uhh, exhaust manifold and UR uppipe are bolted on/torqued. left the turbo off so i have easy clearance to bellhousing bolts. intake manifold is back in/torqued, all applicable wiring is reconnected.

tomorrows easter, and i'll get a LOT of hell if im working on the car all day on easter, so im shooting to drop it back in monday afternoon. she oughta run this week :D

update: she runs again. the car EXCELS at blowing off IC hoses. i actually broke one of the clamps this time.

odd vacuum issues though. ~ -8 -> -10 @ idle, stumbles on quick jab of the throttle, but immediately recovers, and once its above ~ 1300rpm or so, vac is -17 -> -19. quick jabs also shoot to 0, so i know the gauge isnt boned (plus its dead on w/ my AP)

ideas?
