View Full Version : Ultimate Racing GT40R Dyno Results Part 1
Ultimate Racing 03-19-2007, 02:44 PM Hey guys,
Over the past however many months, we've been working quietly on a pretty nifty setup. Many of you are familiar with our GT40R kits available. Both Twin Scroll, and our production-based Single Scroll. Unless you've been living in a cave for the past couple of years you're more than likely familiar with the performance our Twin Scroll GT4088R setup has given Big Valley's STi. But, what about the production-based Single Scroll kit? We've gotten countless emails asking about spool-up time, and dyno numbers. We've only been able to make assumptions up until now.
Here is an 04 STi that we have been working on for the past while.
http://www.ultimate-racing.com/sti/gt40r/GT40R-EngineBay.JPG
It's taken a long time simply because we were working on it on, and off. Keep in mind, these results may not be what EVERYONE is looking for. The majority of the turbo kits we offer are usually first introduced with dyno charts (and/or videos) featuring a stock engine. This is not the case with this one. This STi features a built bottom end, with very impressive headwork. It's not that this setup won't work with a stock engine, we just didn't want to waste time with one as we want big power, and don't care to do things twice.
Here's a brief mod list:
04 STi
Engine
- 2.5L
- Forged Pistons (8.8:1)
- Forged Rods
- Ductile Iron Sleeves
- ARP Head Studs
- 272/272 Camshafts
- Adjustable Cam Gears (No more AVCS)
- Springs/Ti Retainers/ Valves
- Ported Heads
- Upgraded Oil Pump
Turbo, etc
- Ultimate Racing GT4088R Single Scroll Turbo Kit (0.81 A/R)
- Ultimate Racing Custom 3.5" Exhaust
- Ultimate Racing FMIC w/ TiAL BOV
- Ultimate Racing 1000cc Top Feed Injectors and Fuel Rail Setup
- Walbro 255lph Intank Pump
- GT Spec Ver 2 Headers
- Reversed Intake Manifold
- Larger Throttle Body with Throttle Cable and Pedal Assy (No more DBW)
- AEM EMS Standalone (Running Speed Density)
These are pretty much the essentials. There's probably more I'm missing, but these are what come to mind at the moment.
Now onto the results.
http://www.ultimate-racing.com/sti/gt40r/sti-gt40r-dyno-sae.bmp
Boost was held @ 15psi. It will remain this way until we upgrade the fuel system. Please keep in mind that this setup was originally intended for drag racing.
We first dyno'd the car with cam gears zero'd. This gave us the good results. Power output, and spool were loosely similar to what we see with GT35R 1.06 setups that run about 19-20psi. So this is great news considering we're only running 15psi.
Then came the annoying part. Dialing in the cam gears. We began tuning the cam gears for an optimal drag racing setup. This took many dyno pulls but the results were fantastic. How about a Subaru powerband that carries to 8000rpm and ACTUALLY MAKES POWER? A rare sight to see. Of course, with the gain in top end, we lost a bit down low. This being a drag race setup, we really didn't care.
When we get some more spare time, we'll be upgrading the fuel system to one of our surge tank setups, and larger injectors. I expect to see big numbers. This turbo really hasn't even come close to waking up yet at only 15psi.
So that's all for Part 1.
Questions? Comments? Flames?

Gfunk720 03-19-2007, 02:48 PM Looks nice... Cant wait to see some 20+ psi action
remowgn 03-19-2007, 02:50 PM 450whp at 15psi.. that's nothing to sneeze at :) So- the only difference between those two graphs is adjusting the cam gears and re-tuning? No changes in boost?

Correct. No changes in boost whatsoever. I'm pretty bored of it at 15psi to be honest. Can't wait for more boost.

Homemade WRX 03-19-2007, 02:53 PM now I'm really anxious to get my 9500 rpm S372 set up done...
SloRice 03-19-2007, 02:55 PM Any chance of changing to the GT4094R as it seems to have quite a bit better compressor map.
p.s. nice numbers for 15PSI. :)
Very nice, its gonna be a monster

midnite_wrex 03-19-2007, 04:20 PM looks like you guys are really on to something with the cam gears and headwork... i can only imagine with some boost! i think you're going to need a bigger graph. :D

dan avoN7 03-19-2007, 05:33 PM WHat size injectors do you think are required to run this setup at 30psi? I am looking to go with a 4088r or PT67R soon and was planning to only run rc1000cc injectors with a surge tank and a1000 pump.
jigga 03-19-2007, 05:36 PM lol... when I first saw the power in the mid 400 range, I was thinking that something was off!
Then i saw the boost you were running for that power, and thought
Can you provide any details on that intake manifold setup that the car is running? Looks pretty nice :)

Nothing special. Aside from it being reversed, we made a the plenum a touch larger, but that was really just to accept the larger throttle body flange.

ShaggyGT 03-19-2007, 07:38 PM Impressive as always. You guys have the best turbo kits out there. No other company has proven their products time and time again like you guys. Keep up the good work!! Hope to see some track times soon.

What is your fuel pressure set at? What i'm trying to gather is if it was mainly out of fuel because you are running just one single 255 pump or if it was mostly the injector just couldn't flow enough. just seeing if i can get away with 1,000cc injectors if i have enough pump (aeromotive a1000) and up the pressure a tad. going to 1,200cc+ from 1,000cc injectors nearly doubles the cost on them.
blowbyu24 03-19-2007, 08:00 PM my question Darryl,
that sheet shows full boost around 6300rpm.....im planning on getting to 40r turbo kit in the next two weeks.....before i saw your post i thought it was fully spooled at 5500rpm?....or am i just dreaming in hitting full boost that early....my set up is very similar to this one except for the sleeves and i have dual walbro set up with the 1000cc...its going in the the shop the first week of may, so i just want to make sure im getting the right turbo for my needs
midnite_wrex 03-19-2007, 11:08 PM ^^^i think you're reading the chart incorrectly... looks to me like he's got full boost (of 15psi) right before 5krpms. 30+psi is a different story, maybe 5500, but that's a guess.
xdrian 03-19-2007, 11:19 PM bootyful, i love 40r's :) maybe one day i will get one
blowbyu24 03-19-2007, 11:23 PM full torque at 5000 but not hp (full boost)
xdrian 03-19-2007, 11:55 PM if its a turbo this big, dont even bother thinking of when its going to spool, lol.
This thing will spool like there in no tomorrow even after 8000 when 30+ psi or boost is pushing it.
midnite_wrex 03-20-2007, 12:12 AM full torque at 5000 but not hp (full boost)
what?

How much bigger do you think you'll be able to go while still keeping an idle? Granted, it probably doesn't have a very low idle to begin with, but still... are you considering dual injectors?

We've tuned 1600cc's and have idled them well. Gas mileage usually suffers heavily (even with stoich AFR's). More than likely we'll go with 1200's or 1600's.

Saposat 03-23-2007, 07:33 PM I am the proad owener of this beast. This is over a year project in the making. I have only driven the car for a couple weeks putting in 2 K kilometers with 2 pounds of boost. We only dyno'd the car last week. I will be driving for another 2 weeks with 15 psi before it goes back to the dyno so that we can wake up the turbo. Originally the car belonged to UR and the deal was that I'd purchase the car if they can use it for their projects. I do not mind because this is my fun car and I only drive it on the weekends. It can be frustrating, but sometimes being patient and waiting you can see and learn what others are doing. You can also see the kind of mistakes they fall into, so that you can correct them and not make the same ones plus improve in a lot of areas. A lot of frustration, patience and money does pay back at the end.
Special thanks to Ultimate Racing and my beautiful wife for being so patient.

I didn't know that you had to break in the gt40r turbo, i would have thought the initial 1,000miles would have broken it in enough....im guess thats what UR told you to do?

Ultimate Racing 03-27-2007, 10:27 AM wouldnt that have more to do with the fact that this test is single scroll whereas the other test was twin scroll?
Actually, both runs are with the same single scroll kit. Neither run was making full boost @ 6300 rpm. The difference in runs was simply in the cam gear adjustments. There's no AVCS on this car.

The intake gears will work only if you are running non-AVCS cams - like this car. The exhaust cams will work on any DOHC EJ turbo motor (and maybe NA, not sure).

Bart! 11-11-2007, 08:23 AM Cool, I'd like to see this against my friends GT28RS Audi S4. He's also running low boost. Stock block, stock pistons, stock rods.

, this thread is about a GT40R STi, not stock STi's and SRT-4's.
billionaire7 11-11-2007, 07:46 PM ^Yea! Stoner bashing time.

Okay? So I can't comment? Piss off.
Bart! 11-12-2007, 08:40 AM Btw, that STI is putting down close to 400 awhp.
billionaire7 11-12-2007, 10:32 PM ^okay? Point?

Saposat 02-02-2008, 06:21 PM any race gas numbers yet??? Or even 20 psi pump gas numbers?
Soon once I have the time to take the car back to Ultimate Racing shop.
oneoverWRX 02-06-2008, 11:07 AM sounds good. Keep us posted.

Twin disco potato's are nothing to laugh at (unless you want your ass handed to you.) That combo has the potential to make well over 600whp at very low boost.
spoolindc2 02-24-2008, 02:15 PM either way this discussion is about a built sti with a gt-40r and how it stacks up against similar setups with smaller turbo's, i.e. gt-35 or a fp-red or something similar.
I like the fact that this car makes some serious power all the way up to redline, however with only 15 psi running through this BUILT motor, there is room for waaaay more power, just take the skirt off and turn up the wick with some c-16!!!
saintluciascooby 02-25-2008, 07:38 AM This is the single scroll kit not the twin right?
oneoverWRX 02-25-2008, 02:31 PM yes, it is the single scroll kit with a 4088r.
SubySales 02-25-2008, 02:35 PM Hmmm.....something doesn't add up. What turbo is this out of?
oneoverWRX 02-25-2008, 02:45 PM well.....i dont think it is stock on anything. It is a Garrett turbo. www.turbobygarrett.com will get you there.
