View Full Version : Stick and Steptronic

Purely considerly shifting speed, without regards to the ability to rev-match etc., how do think stick and Steptronic (alike) compares?
Basically, what I see is, when I was trying out my friend's Acura 3.2CL typeS, shifting both direction was pretty swift. What's more, it allows me to rev almost up to red line which was a blast with Vtec. I wouldn't think I could downshift it any quicker on my Rex when I double-clutch. Upshifting with a stick is quick, nonetheless.
Just a thought when some people argues that stick is "quicker" when it comes to shifting compare to any auto technology.

I drove a Lexus IS300 with the 'Tiptronic' gearbox & IMHO, it sucked. It was just plain boring. Personally, I would never accept as substitue a slushbox over a stick - too much of a compromise. That said do I think it's quicker? No.....

The design of an automatic transmission leads to power loss to the wheels, triptronic or not. Doesn't matter how fast you can shift it.

The only other case I can think of is a Supra TT Auto is faster than a manual in the 1/4 because of no boost loss between shifts...

But then there are those auto domestics.... Turbo 350 or 400 anyone?

A manual will never shift faster than an auto.

On the Acura and Lexus, the automatic is a 5-speed automatic so you get the same gearing as a 5-speed manual.

on the WRX however (like most cars), the WRX is a 4-spd so the gears are spaced apart more which leaves out of your power band longer.

Plus, an auto will always cause more drivetrain power loss than a manual gearbox.

But, I forgot where I am going with this so take those facts for what they are worth

Those things are old. Now Chevy mostly uses the 700R-4 which is electronically controlled. With a shift kit, all of them are even faster but the turbo 350 and 400 were good for their day and could take a lot of abuse :)

And yes Jeremy, I losti t a long time ago ;)

New version of the 700R4 is the 4L60E and the big brother is the 4L80E....and you can make those things shift like it's nothing....GM's got wonderful transmissions combined with excellent control over their shift valves...the auto in the prelude is a little slow on the shifting but it just takes some adapting to get used to...kinda nice if you share the car with someone who can't drive stick...but not up to par with what it should be.

I hate Honda Auto's. they always flair between shifts for some reason (I sold Hondas for a while). :)
