Nissan will use the New York Auto Show in April to showcase the 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe — the successor to the popular G35. Leading the enhancements to the second-generation G Coupe is the first-ever application of the new VQ37VHR VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) 3.7-liter V6 engine producing an estimated 330 horsepower.

The G37 Coupe’s refined platform and chassis includes an available advanced 4-Wheel Active Steer (4WAS) system, while braking and handling is targeted to be among the best in the luxury sport coupe class.

Available technological features include a touch-screen navigation system with XM NavTraffic real-time traffic function and a 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive, RearView Monitor and an 11-speaker Infiniti Studio on Wheels by Bose audio system with 24-bit Burr Brown DAC and 3-way door speaker arrays with 10-inch woofers.

The new 2008 G37 Coupe is set to arrive at Infiniti retailers nationwide in August 2007.

Ahh the classic coupe line!

Anybody has info on what this VVEL is?

EDIT: Actually the real life photos are not nearly as flattering. It looks too much like the Altima coupe. Which is a good design, but a bit too predictable.

Very nice looking update to an already nice looking car.

I must say though, that "G37" just doesn't roll off the tough as easily as "G35"... and "370Z" sounds even worse... but maybe that's just me.

Lets see how the new Impreza hatch looks, and if I don't like it maybe I'll get this and some beater car for my snowboarding trips.

Way too derivative of the last G35. I expected something more like the old CTS to the new CTS. Nissan is playing it way too safe lately. They brought us segmenting busting styling with the 350z, Altima, Murano, G35, and FX35. The New Altima fails to move the design forward, and this G37 fails to move the design forward. Playing it safe... but the conservatism is lame.

It's not as aggressive as I'd hoped. It looks nice, but nothing mind blowing. I am concerned it looks too much like the Altima, and the Z from the side. The G35 weighed about 3550 pounds and 298 peak HP, this weighs roughly 3650 pounds and 330 peak HP, so at least the weight:power improves a bit (11.9 lbs/pk HP to 11.1 lbs/pk HP). I'll have to see it in person. I will likely get a 2009 G37, so I hope they'll tweak the looks a bit mid-2008 or in time for MY 2009 to be more aggressive.

My guess extrapolating from the current G35 Sedan with the 3.5VQ-HR

0 - 60 appx 5.0 (maybe 4.9 but I doubt it)

1/4 appx 13.5

Yes, the 335i has an open differential, which sucks for such a pricey car (my Miata has a limited-slip), although maybe it's a German vs. Japanese thing (Porsches rarely have limited-slip diffs either, like BMWers).

I don't know the last time that happened, but what does that have to do with me hoping the weight would be reduced? I have no doubt it's happened many times, as aluminum, carbon fiber and better build techniques have progressed throughout the years. If you only made decisions based on when the last time something happened, there'd never be innovation. Now turn that angry face into a happy face! :)

hmmmmm...G37x ?!?

http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=16058

New Infiniti forms the basis of the next GTR.

This sleek coupe is the new Infiniti G37, due to be unveiled at the New York Motor Show next April. For the first time, the Infiniti brand will be available officially in the UK when this car arrives in British showrooms in late 2008. And it’ll be in right hand drive form too.

Powered by a 330bhp 3.7 litre V6, and with the option of four wheel drive, the G37 should feature plenty of technology such as four-wheel active steering and a host of electronic gadgets inside the cabin. Infiniti is Nissan’s equivalent to Toyota’s Lexus in Japan, and has been a huge success in the US in recent years. However, Infiniti has more of a sporting edge than its Japanese rival, and this car will be aimed squarely at rivals such as the BMW Three series coupe.

If the basic shape of this coupe looks familiar, then imagine it with a tougher stance and plenty of gaffer tape applied over some rough panel work - and think of the Nurburgring too. The G37 forms the basis of the next Skyline GTR, regularly seen thrashing around the Nordschleife as it nears a state of production readiness.

The G37 won’t be the only new arrival from Infiniti. There’s also the G35 saloon version of this car, the FX45 SUV and a new, smaller SUV to challenge the likes of the BMW X3 and Lexus RX.

First Drive: 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe
G-Force: More Beauty, More Beast

By Ron Kiino

One look at the "G37" badge on the trunklid of Infiniti's new sport coupe, and it's evident there's something bigger and better at play here. Not that its predecessor, the G35 coupe, was in desperate need of becoming bigger or better. With a 293-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6, a stout front-mid (FM) platform, and sheetmetal so arousing you can throw away the Viagra, the G35 coupe wasn't only a standout player in its segment but also a huge hit for Infiniti. In fact, since it arrived for the 2003 model year, the G coupe has averaged annual sales of nearly 26,000, numbers that account for nearly 40 percent of all G sales. And with just over 20,000 sold in 2006, Infiniti moved more G coupes than BMW did 3 Series coupes (slightly under 15,000, not including convertibles). Who says coupes are dead?

So it's no surprise that following such smashing success, not to mention BMW's recent introduction of the twin-turbocharged, 300-horsepower E92 335i coupe, Infiniti would roll out a fresh two-door of its own, aiming to keep that hot streak hot and BMW on ice. To do so, Infiniti has remodeled the G Coupe's interior, tweaked the chassis, and enhanced the styling. And, lest we forget, it dropped a new V-6 underhood with 37 more horsepower. Bigger and better? Why not?

Offering an advanced peek at the G37, Infiniti invited us out to its Arizona Test Center, a 3050-acre oasis of sand, dirt, farms, and, most important, pavement in Stanfield, about 50 miles south of Phoenix. ATC features a 5.7-mile high-speed oval and four road courses, where we were allowed a handful of laps on the oval and one of the courses, just enough to get a feel for the new G. But before we delve into our initial impressions, some pertinent background info.

As its name suggests, the G37 is motivated by a new 3.7-liter VQ-series V-6 that delivers 330 horses and 270 pound-feet of torque. Compared with the 306-horse, 3.5-liter, 268-pound-foot V-6 in the second-gen G sedan, the 3.7 utilizes the same 95.5mm bore but features a longer 86.0mm stroke (versus 81.4 mm), a higher-compression ratio (11.0:1 versus 10.6:1), and roughly 35-percent unique parts. The "VHR" components denote Infiniti's innovative Variable Valve Event and Lift technology and the 3.7's "high-revolution" capability, i.e., a redline of 7500 rpm. According to Infiniti, VVEL, which continuously varies the timing and lift of the intake valves, provides more power and torque throughout the powerband as well as improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. This vigorous VQ will no doubt find its way into such other Infiniti products as the FX sport/ute and the M and G sedans, not to mention the next Nissan Z and the upcoming Skyline GT-R.

While upon first glance the new coupe bears a striking resemblance to the old one, longer examination reveals that designers burned plenty of midnight oil to recharge the car's lines. Every body panel is new, and the G37 incorporates fresh design cues introduced on the sedan, including a wave hood, a double-arch grille, L-shaped headlamps, and an integrated rear spoiler. The overall look is more grown up, but it still conveys that sense of speed and power, certainly with the distinct character line that links the front and rear fenders. Dimensionally, the G37 hasn't strayed far from its precursor, growing 0.9 inch in length and 0.2 inch in width, while shrinking 0.1 inch in height. Wheelbase remains at 112.2 inches, while front and rear tracks widen by 0.5 and 0.9 inch, respectively.

Offical Press Release:

AT A GLANCE: INFINITI G37 COUPE

The all-new 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe, which makes its world debut at the 2007 New York International Auto Show, combines the exhilarating performance, stunning styling and modern, sporty interior of the original Infiniti G Coupe, accelerating each to new levels. The new, second generation G Coupe is set to arrive at Infiniti retailers nationwide in August 2007.

Leading the enhancements to the G37 Coupe is the first-ever application of the new 3.7-litre V6 engine with VVEL (for Variable Valve Event and Lift). Estimated at 330 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, the VQ37VHR contains approximately 35 percent unique parts content from the new VQ35HR engine introduced in the 2007 G35 Sedan last year.

Along with utilising a larger displacement than the previous 3.5-litre powerplant, the VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side, helping to improve not only performance and response but also emissions and fuel efficiency. Overall vehicle fuel economy improvements are estimated to be nearly one mpg better than the G35 Sedan and nearly two mpg better than the previous generation G35 Coupe (actual EPA ratings will be announced at a later date).

The engine is backed by a choice of an upgraded electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission with available paddle shifters or a significantly revised and more refined 6-speed manual transmission.

The G37 Coupe’s enhanced platform and chassis also includes an available advanced 4-Wheel Active Steer system (4WAS), which helps improve vehicle handling performance by adjusting both the front steering gear ratios and the rear suspension geometry according to steering input and vehicle speed. Braking and handling is targeted to be among the best in the luxury sport coupe class.

All of these advanced performance systems are wrapped in an all-new seductive skin. The G37 Coupe exterior design features flowing front fender curves, a wave-style hood, smooth front fascia with Infiniti’s signature double-arch grille and L-shaped headlights. The side character line and side sills, as well as large wheel and tyre packages transmit an added sense of power and vibrancy.

Inside, Infiniti-levels of craftsmanship are apparent throughout the all-new interior design, including the use of unique materials and finishes with traditional Japanese design cues. The new G Coupe also includes an extensive list of available technological features – a touch screen navigation system with XM® NavTraffic™ real-time traffic function, RearView Monitor and an available 11-speaker Infiniti “Studio on Wheels”™ by Bose® audio system with 24-bit Burr Brown DAC, 3-way door speaker arrays with 10-inch woofers and a 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive.

Oh boy, this is horrible! When they show the proto pics, I was really excited about the new coupe (even contemplated purchasing one). But now I see that it's just a suped up Altima coupe. The last gen coupe was so much better in my opinion. Here's to 4 years of this model *I see booty*
