View Full Version : Spare set of heads and porting

I'm picking up a spare set of heads this weekend and thinking about sending them out for some port work since the ones I'm running are certified garbage and shouldn't even be on my daily driven, currently running vehicle. I've had some correspondence with Dan at DPR about my options and they are somewhat close in SoCal but I could also send them to Ron at AXIS since I'm not really looking for a lightning fast turnaround.

I'm not running or planning on running a monster turbo but I do have a built bottom end and I plan on putting my cosworth non-AVCS cams on top. Of the two mentioned above who do you think could yield me the best results? Anyone with other recommendation feel free to let a brotha know. I need to get my current heads off of my motor STAT.

Any help out there?

What do you mean by best?

If best = more torque then get them ported

If best = higher rpm then get the appropriate valvetrain

From what I read, don't get cams if you're not planning on upping your redline. Just like bigger turbos, upgraded cams give you more power at higher rpm but lower your lowend power.

My suggestion would be to get the heads ported, but keep the stock cams.
That should give you most amount of "fun"

maybe new valves, thats what Ron recommended for me to help with flow on wrx heads. So I got a set of supertech oversized ni valves this time around and didnt mess around with more porting.

Well I already have the AXIS stg 1 valvetrain and Cosworth non-AVCS 275 cams but the heads I have them in are garbage. I was thinking of going with oversized valves to begin with but I figured since I have a spare set why not get some port work done too.

I don't plan on revving past 7500rpms but I want a faster than average car that would be a blast on the SoCal road coarses and the street. I'm willing to spend $1500-2k for good work I'm just looking for options.

reference this thread, not sure what heads you have, but there's a certain set of wrx heads that I think have different dog leg ports than normal, and the Georgie performance guys seem to know about it. who knows, maybe thats the spare set you have now, but it might be a better foundation for you to start from if your current heads are not so hot and another alternative to porting.

I'm picked up a set of '03 WRX heads. Nothing special but with work they can be.
