View Full Version : Swap options for a '97 OBS?

So, I just picked up an OBS. (really cheap, $2000)
It's the single port 2.2, 5 spd. The body is in MINT shape.
What can I do with it?
I realize that with enough time and money, I can do anything I want. Unfortunately, time isn't one of the things I have in abundance. Neither is money at the point. (when I say that, I mean that I don't have 5 grand kicking around)
My last car was a '93 L with a 2001 2.5RS motor. That was an easy, relatively cheap swap. It took me 2 days, and with cams and stuff, it put down 150whp and 158 wtq.
Is there anything along the same lines that I can do with this car?
I thought about droppping turbo pistons into another 2.2 block, and playing with that, but I wonder if that's the best thing to do.
I don't have the time and money for a full on WRX swap. (yes, that's what I'd like to do, it's just not feasible at the moment)
Is it the same amount of work to swap in a JDM wrx motor as it is for a USDM block? What about going RHD at the same time?
What about a USDM sti block with NA 2.5 heads? Will that setup plug into my 2.2 harness?
Anything mechanical, I have no problem doing. Even simple wiring. (I had to do some with my last swap) I'm just not up to the task of a full on splicing wiring job...
Any suggestions?

Get an NA 25 block from an rs or legacy and drop that and be done with it.

will that work without issue? Same idea as my 1.8 to 2.5 swap?

257 w/2.5 NA heads FTW! cheap and durable

your 2.2 with some low comp. pistons would walk a WRX(mine did. OBS 2.2 T) and would be cheap. just rebuilding your block. arghhh. i would rather swap than tear down a running engine. find a decent used 2.2 block and build it out of the car and drop in.

reading>you :alien: (all in good fun)

So, what years 2.2 can I look at? The current motor "only" has 125k on it, so it will be good for quite a while. If I go the 2.2t route, what else can I do besides turbo pistons (OEM 2.2T pistons)
Any way to get away from the single port thing (why did Subaru do this)?

I have read that the 2.2's share the same rods and crank as the 2.2T. Is this true over all the years or specific to the earlier Legacy motors?

90-94 legacy 2.2's(NA) had same block as 2.2T supposedly. other 2.2's(newer legacy and impreza have same size as 2.2T, but are different quality internals fwiw).

but i turbo'd my 2.2 at around 130K for around 30K. worked well, and was fast even at 5-6psi.

i was thinking of too many things at once while giving options this am! i totally misread what was posted. but you have options, and some good cheap ones also!

save up your $ and shop for a usdm swap ..
its not that much,if any, more expensive than the other projects that won't be dependable

turbo it using stock stuff

with the right tuning it should be reliable

a guy here from awhile back had a 98 impreza L turbo'd with no problems for a year i believe, @ 10 psi

thanks, but I think I'm going to go the 2.2T route, or the 257 with the NA heads....

could you direct me to links that give good details of this swap/build? I don't have a lot of free time at work anymore... :(
