I like them but this will be my first build. The engine builders handbook is more general while the blue printing book fleshes things out. I'd recomend buying both of them as they complement one another nicely. They both have good pictures and diagrams and are clearly written. I want to stress that I, like you am new to this and am anxious to hear other sugestions.

Lots of carcraft, circletrack, and chevyperformance articles out there--all V8 stuff (so is the Monroe book). Nothing beats working on the engine and running things buy a real builder and/or machinist as you go along.

Measure twice, cut once applies, only the art of measuring at this level is nearly an art plus you need to calibrate your instruments--unlike a tape measure--the level of precision is awe inspiring for the normal person.

Tolerence means, you have to tolerate that you'll never get it perfect.
