Your best bet is to probably just try and find reviews of the cars for each year and compare them. Try msn.com and look under Auto's.

When I was looking I could not find a "bad" year and began shopping for a low milage low price and located a '97 which I am happy with. Consumer Report's guide to used cars has a chart for each year and rates the reliability of each major system. Usually the public library has these past issues.

Generally, the Impreza gets better as time moves on.
Some motors have certain parts which are stronger or flow better than others. I think it depends on the size of the motor since they were all the same, except in 97 the motors started having more power. And SOHC > DOHC. There were recalls on SOHC head gaskets for 99-02 2.5Ls though.
2.5L SOHC Heads are the best flowing.
2.2L Motors are really strong.
The block from the EJ22T (91-94 legacy turbo) is fully closed and is the strongest block you could get. Forged crank/rods stock. Oil squirters. 8:1 CR. It is the block that the 22b used.
This is all off the top of my head though.
