I am picking up a 02 WRX Black Wagon this coming Friday (Dec 14th). Should I have the dealer put on the optional air cleaner or go totally after market. On my C5 vette the after market cold air intake was a good 8-10 HP. What can I expect with any air box mods on the WRX? Thanks in advance for any input.:) :p

Im not sure what option you talking about? The only air filter the dealer has is for the inside the car for dust and stuff like that, not like a K&N. A K&N would help but not much.
Doing just the air box mod you really will not get that much, but if you went with a full CAI you will see about the same, 8-10hp, better top end.

Before doing any mods to your car, you might want to check out this thread in the Warranty Issues & SOA Problems forum:

Also, check out the Factory Forced Induction forum for more info on cold air intakes.

EMDExpressWRX - the subaru air cleaner is for the HVAC system.... it's so you don't have to breathe so much smog and dust. It has nothing to do with the engine's intake.

So you're saying CAI plumbing intot he fender results in 8-10hp more than a free flowing filter inside the engine compartment? I find that very hard to believe, do you have any dyno results showing gains similar to that?

How about this as a test: would no filter, no box on a cold day increase performance? That should be even less restricted than a CAI, right? I think it would get similar gains: almost none. But I'd love to hear from someone that's got more than butt dyno experience with this.
