One of the few things wrong with the current-generation Ford Fiesta is that it looks far duller than it actually is. Sandwiched between the much more striking Ka and the MkI Focus when it was launched in 2002, it was met with shrugs all round. Some minor improvements 18 months ago did little to help its image. Even the hot ST model is a bit polite-looking.

Sunglasses on, then, for the arrival of the Fiesta Zetec S 30th Anniversary, a limited edition of 400 cars that you'll not fail to notice. It costs £12,595, which is £1,000 more than the regular Zetec S, but it comes with about £1,400 worth of extras. Or looked at the other way around, it costs £1,000 less than the quicker, more powerful ST. Crucially, even though the Anniversary looks far more striking and sporty than the ST, its insurance is six groups lower (and it's nine groups lower than the very rapid Vauxhall Corsa VXR).

Depending on how flamboyant you're feeling, the 30th Anniversary might make you view the regular Fiesta's visual dullness with a new respect. If, however, you've had your inner exhibitionist liberated by all those Minis decorated with stripes and chequers and flags, then this might just be the Fiesta you've been waiting for. It's mechanically identical to the normal three-door-only 1.6 petrol Zetec S, so its 99bhp gives a top speed of 114mph, it accelerates to 60mph in a useful but not exciting 9.9 seconds, and it gives the same combined fuel consumption figure of 41.5mpg. Not headline-grabbing figures, but a good balance

Those extras succeed in making the Fiesta feel that crucial bit more special. As well as the compulsory yellow paint and chequered roof, you get black mirrors and door handles, tinted glass, 16" alloys and a black roof spoiler. Inside, you get excellent sports seats, leather trim, an alarm and an iPod socket.

It's been too easy for too long to overlook the Fiesta. Sure, recent arrivals from all around the world - from the Swift to the new Corsa - have all been good. But the Fiesta is still a car that's fun to drive, certainly with this engine; some of the smaller engines do it no favours, simply reminding you that the MkVI is a bigger, heavier car than any previous Fiesta.

It's sturdy and roomy enough to feel like a grown-up car for grown-ups, but it's also perky and flickable enough to bring a smile to your face on the way home from work. Generations of Brits have learnt to drive in Fiestas, and then moved on to something bigger, if not always better. Today it's a car that - yellow paint aside - transcends age, gender and class, in a good way. It's the people's hatchback.

And never mind the fact that the Fiesta actually arrived 31 years ago.

Screw Ford. They make fun, cool cars for the Europeans and leave us with boring crap, then they wonder why their US market share is dropping and their profits are plummeting (well, more like "losses increasing"). Every time I see a Eurospec Ford I think,"Unlike the Mustang/US Focus/500, that's something I'd buy."

By the way - that roof is a total Mini Cooper rip off and they should ditch it for that reason.

It seems that every once in a while Ford starts to figure it all out... like with the Contour SVT and the Focus SVT........ and then it's like they forget and completely ignor that segment.
