i'm trying to point my friend in the right direction... he found a clean 5mt FWD OBDI 94L, and plans on doing a full STi swap in the near future. is the FWD going to hinder/expense the job to the point where it's better to start with AWD? the car is super clean, 26k granny miles etc etc. i'm advising him to just get a JDM front clip. what else does he need aside from the gas tank?
thanks in advance :)
also, IIRC purplish pearl was a stock L color. not positive though. has this car been painted?

No it'll be fine if he gets the full STi drivetrain. The chassis is the same between fwd/awd all the mounting points will be there.
One extra step will be the fuel tank for awd but best to use the STi as well since it has an extra sensor earlier years did not have.

my 95 L AWD one owner had 175K ($1350+ some change in the seats!) and passed emissions like a champ with a leaky gas tank!
your friends car MAY have an AWD tank, but iirc more 95's had them. later built 94's may be the exception. check for a front to back dent in the tank where the driveshaft goes.
and front clip is gonna save some headaches and time. i did it this way, and can't imagine how long it'd take w/o one. i still had to find/order parts with a clip at my disposal.

I know a Guy that did FWD auto to 5-speed AWD. Legacy777 I think is his name he usually posts on legacy central. He has a great write up on that swap. I know right now that your rear hub assemblies are totally different. Even the rear struts are different. I'm not sure but I also think the stabalizers are different(in the back). My 94 Legacy is FWD and I know for a fact that the gas tank is completely different on the FWD models then the AWD models. The best thing to do is find a parts AWD legacy and just transfer the parts over form the donor car. As for the purplish pearl color...yes it's a stock Legacy color, not the nicest but a stock color all the same. My Parts car is the same color.
Hope that helps

P.s. Is it a wagon or a sedan?

my car started as a FWD, i would probobly be cheaper to get the FWD cuz its cheaper and you get all the AWD stuff with the full drivetrain, Just need a gastank, make sure its from a 02-04 AWD car. it will make wireing alot easier
