Yes, just make sure your wheels will clear them.

Yes. I have 2002 WRX brakes all around on my 97 L. Your stock L wheels might not clear the brakes though. Upgrade your wheels to some stock WRX ones and it will be fine. I can't tell you enough how much of a change it is when upgrading the front brakes to WRX ones, much more stopping power. That is without a doubt the best mod I did on my car. If you are going to do them though, you might as well throw some stainless steel lines on there as well. It's a great upgrade and easy to do.

What all did you have to replace on it? Everything, or just callipers and rotors?

Calipers are a bolt on as long as you have the WRX brackets.

Good write up (for an RS, so different calipers than your car, but otherwise the same deal) here:

You could pay $120 for the caliper brackets alone, or $100 for calipers, brackets, pads and rotors.

Somebody should act quick so I don't get sidetracked on saving up for Carisma's hood.

Hoping to do this upgrade on my 97 L wagon in the near future...

Here's my advice when it comes to buying the stuff. Look around your area for people doing upgrades. Search your forums. If you see someone doing WRX brake upgrades, ask if you can come by and buy them. You'd be surprised at what you can pickup for fairly cheap. I got my complete front set for $80 and I got the back set for like $120. If you take your time you can really get a good deal on these, especially since we're getting into the spring time now. People will be catching the mod bug. I myself am starting to twitch and scratch a little.

I have 97 L wagon and I'm telling you, the brake upgrade is the best one you can make. It's a world of difference. And don't listen to others who talk about getting a mushy pedal feeling. All that means is that they didn't do it right. More specifically, they probably didn't bleed their brakes right.

Here are the L brakes next to the WRX ones.

The L to WRX break upgrade is a great mod. However a thing to consider is to also change out the rear breaks as well.
By putting on only the front breaks, and having the rears stay stock. The braking bias will now be much more to the front breaks instead of the back.
Also consider the driving you will be doing with this vehicle. If you plan on doing track days, a Subaru 4 pot option will be the way to go.
After taking out a GC8 to a track that had the WRX breaks on the front and upgraded rears, it was easy to tell that they where not capable to do hard consistent laps, while staying strong and not fading.
When doing this mod, also consider putting on a more aggressive pad. At least Axxis ultimate, or a Hawk HPS.

Thanks

I plan on doing both front and back. Whats involved in replacing the stock rear drums with wrx rear disks. I found front and rear calipers for 200 shipped. Is that a good price?

It's been a while but for the backs I believe you need the following:

Brackets, Calipers, E-brake cables, Hubs, rotors, pads, brake lines (might as well put in stainless steel ones).

As far as the price, I would say wait until you can get the entire setup from someone. If that's the price for just the calipers I wouldn't bother. I'm not sure what the prices are like now, but it wasn't that bad when I was doing them.

The front setup usually sells for about $80-125
The complete rear setup is usually $150-200

yes they will fit. I have full WRX brakes on my 98 2.5rs. I picked up the complete set localy for 200 bucks. look around....guys upgrading always get rid of the stock crap for cheap.

they work 1000x better than stock. I can kick on the ABS doing 80 pretty easily...

Does this only apply to RS? Can you do this swap on earlier imp?

well...I put my stock 98 2.5rs brake setup on my 97L.... so I'm guessing if the wrx fit the RS...that it would fit the L as well

Like I said, I have 2002 WRX brakes all around my 97 L. Yes, you can do it on older models, but you have to adhere to the same guidelines, in most cases larger wheels, at least 16" for the wrx ones, unless you use RS brackets, and for the rears you need the hubs, brackets, blah blah blah the same list I said above. It's a great mod.

yea, its totaly worth it to do the full conversion front and rear.... after you switch out those crappy drum brakes...and bolt on those HUGE new front rotors and 2 pots....like like a completely different car.

I have a set of rears for sale - but even better than a WRx there are the vented rotor. An even better compliment to the larger WRX fronts, only second to the rear 2pots to which I upgraded to.
