View Full Version : WRX Acceleration Without Launch?
Hi,
I did a search and could not find what I was looking for. I was just curious roughly how fast is the WRX 0-60 and 1/4 mile, if you don't launch? I am asking because one test of a 5 speed produced a 0-60 time of 7.3 sec, supposedly that was without a launch. I thought it would be in the mid 6s.
thanks
gabedude 12-08-2001, 06:46 PM Subaru originally published 0-60 of 6.5 and 1/4 in the high 14's. That would be without a high rpm clutch drop.
Akiata 12-08-2001, 07:19 PM It wouldn't be very good.
You can still get marginal times by revving a little bit. Not like 5k clutch drop. I have only done really fast starts about 6 times. I do auto x it and launch fairly hard but it doesn't snap my neck back.
If you are talking about starting normally then mashing the gas, I would say your estamate would be correct.
SteVTEC 12-08-2001, 07:31 PM CarTest2000 (http://www.cartest2000.com) Automobile Acceleration Simulation software gives the following for 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs w/o high-rpm clutch dump launches:
2000rpm Clutch Slip Launch: 7.81s, 16.38s @ 91.58 mph
2500rpm Clutch Slip Launch: 6.93s, 15.56s @ 92.04 mph
3000rpm Clutch Slip Launch: 6.35s, 15.05s @ 92.09 mph
3500rpm Clutch Slip Launch: 6.35s, 15.06s @ 92.11 mph
6000rpm Clutch Dump Launch: 5.90s, 14.62s @ 93.66 mph
A good, non-abusive place to launch with reasonable performance seems to be 2500rpm or so. I don't own a WRX so I couldn't tell you first hand - I drive an Accord V6 (lightly modified) but might buy a WRX in the future ;)
If there are mods available that can help to lower the spool point of the turbo then that would probably help with lower RPM lauches on the WRX tremendously since this engine makes most of its power from the turbo :)

probably, but why bother launching like that. It seems slow because if you bog, you get turbo lag and end up being slower than a 'normal' 2wd. From a roll. the WRX is still very fast.

That's odd. Even when I totally messed up the lauch (2.0-2.3 60') I NEVER ran a 15 anything. Also, that sim software isn't really that accurate when it comes to launching. I too have a version at home. I'd say with a bad 2.0+ launch you can run 14.7's. With an average driver/launch you can expect a 14.4.

I *know* the WRX will do better than that. Thanks for the other info as well. It's good to know that you can still get 14's in the rex w/o abusive launches. :)

I make it a point to practice launching at anywhere between 3 and 6K RPM from every stoplight I hit. Just depends on what I feel like doing at the time.
:D
should be around 6.6 same as the S4 and 330xi per the Car and Driver test..
smash0r 12-11-2001, 02:50 AM Tonight, using a G Tech meter (not the most accurate thing in the world) I got a 5.89 (best time, avg over 3 runs was 6.0) with a 4k slip, no dumpage.
Car is stock, except for a K&N panel filter.
Azuth 12-11-2001, 12:12 PM I've always done a slip-launch from about 3.5K when I wanted to go fast. The couple times I dumped the clutch it felt slower for some reason. Maybe I was dumping from a lower RPM, but I just feel bad doing that to my car. I'll slip-launch her all day though!
yakabazzi 12-11-2001, 12:22 PM Ok, dumb question just so I'm clear. When you say "dump launch" are you talking about letting your foot just slide off the clutch so it pops up instantly.

yes. He means going from pushing the clutch in all the way to fully releasing it. And that only works well when you build boost first (floor it for a second before you pop it). BAM! 1.8 60'! Gotta love it. That alone usually gets me about 3-4 instant car lengths on people! :D
I only 'launch' when I'm at the track or in a serious race. During normal traffic I let it bog a little, then let the awesome tq come in at 3-4K.

Hyperdash 12-12-2001, 06:08 AM my friend went to a track with his wrx, never drag raced before in his life, he didnt slip or drop the clutch at any rpm, just took off like how a normal (non racing) kinda person would, and he got a 16.3 0-400.
