I am getting ready to install my new setup on my 2.0. TDO5 EWG 20g 7. Lag is not as big of an issue on the TDO5 like it is on the TDO6. BUt I still want to work on a faster spool. I talked to a couple guys running the setup and they said they reach full boost at around 28-3100. Not bad. I already bought RA's and a lightweight flywheel to help with a faster spool.

My question was this.....Is there a cam that is strictly for bottom end? Is it worth the money? Also, do you think that a 70mm intake will help also. I know I am asking a lot out of a 20g spool wise, but I have seen a few guys with a 2500rpm full boost spool. I would like to get close. thanks guys.

sti cam is great b/c its designed for low end power

Yeah STi Cam or i think crower makes a 256 or something very mild that is good down low...if your ripping it apart to do cams might as well PnP your heads and do the valvetrain too

Search the private for sale section...I'm not sure if STi cams would be a direct drop in...before you buy cams, you do realize you basically have to pull the motor to do them right? I know its been down with the motor in, more power to ya if you can

I'm thinking stock heads and the shortest duration cams are for low end. Opening up the heads will hurt the off idle/no boost torque - increase the duration and teh same thing happens, increase ONLY the lift (compared to stock) and you'll make more power up top without losing anything down low.

Also dont forget with a high lift cam (like PeteDucati suggested) that you have to do valvetrain too...those stock valve springs will bind up...never really thought of using lift instead of duration to increase flow...very good point

I'm sure that's the only difference between the USDM WRX and STi cams.. lift. Me thinks the duration is only 208 for the USDM cams - I'll bet the Crower 256 isn't much more which would help retain some grunt while extended the curve to the right.

[Difference] _______Stock___________Crower 256

Adv Duration_______248_____________256

Duration @ .050"____208_____________216

Lift________________.362"___________.380"

EDIT: Sorry for all the lines, spaces wouldnt work and i wanted a table

If your planning on doing Cams take a little time to think it through for what turbo motor and valve train application your planning. One of the biggest things about the Sti cams you need to keep in mind are how will they perform ive definatly heard of people doing this not in my town and the shops not local by any means to me.

Brian Crower will supposedly have his available in april and suposedly you dont need to redo your heads.

I almost threw Cams in my build, and all the other camshafts chioces right now exceed the $1k for half the parts needed.

the STi cams, and whatever you'll end up needing for gaskets and new buckets. (buckets are ~ $26/ea, and you could need up to 16 of them, you can usually reuse a bunch though.

do a lot of reading on the Brian Crower cams. his old stuff was re-weld/re-grinds of stock cams, and you do NOT want welded cams in a daily driver (metallurgy stuff, welded cams are no where NEAR as durable and an OEM cam, or a cam ground from an OEM blank)

i got my Crower stage 2's for $699 shipped (264duration/.400lift)
i got valvesprings from Ron @ Axis Racing (sent them with my new shortblock)

plus new valve keepers, and all the obvious gaskets required when you remove the cylinder heads.

i'd also DEFINATELY suggest porting the heads while you've got them off. i'm doing my own, with great results, with my compressor, and about ~ $60 worth of tools/homemade tools.

WorldOnePerformance (ask Garret) might have some USDM STI cams, you'll have to mod them slightly to run them in a non-AVCS engine.

Brian Crower will be interested to know he has "old stuff". Even Bruce Crower will be interested to hear about the "regrinds" he's been selling to the Subaru market.

I've been under the impression the Crower cams were made from Subaru blanks.. hence the small issue with the base circle being a drop too small.
