View Full Version : ej22 in place of ej18 questions

ok yes i know it will fit. yes i know its as simple as using the ej18 intake and parts on the ej22.

but i have read that you will not be getting full power from the ej22 by using the ej18 ECU, intake and sensors.

is that true. i mean really how much power loss are we talking about.

would it just be worth running the ej22 ECU and intake. yes i know i would probable have to repin some of the wires going to the ECU.

but is it even worth it. anyone play with this

And it is an ej22 out of a 93 legacy 5speed going into a 95 impreza 5speed

A couple of horsepower at most, probably not even that. The only thing that might be off would be the air/fuel ratios, but that could be fixed with an aftermarket controller.

But I doubt you would ever notice any issues.

as for the intake manifold being different, there isnt much if any flow difference between the phase-I 1.8 and 2.2 intake manifolds.

I guess you missed that in the other threads. The sensors, and even the injectors are the same. I didn't bother running a 2.2 ECU because my car is OBD1 and I didn't feel like tracking down an OBD1 2.2L ECU. I doubt it would make a noticable difference anyways.

Overall it wasn't the slight kick in the pants I expected out of an extra 31lb/ft. I justify the swap because I need a new timing belt and cam seals in the 1.8 engine, and I had the 2.2 just sitting around anyways.. The greatest benefit? I can now at least remain at the same speed going up steep grades instead of downshifting, flooring it, and still decelerating like I did with the ****ty 1.8.

2.5L this summer. :)

see mine is more of a story of, bought a insanely strait impreza coupe with no motor. I have an old legacy that is not the prettiest thing in the world, but still has low miles and runs great. so in goes the ej22 and the 4.111 gears. so i hope it makes it a little more peppy then it sitting in my driveway with no motor. :p

But i got the intake and all the bits from the ej18 motor so, i may just swap that on and call it good.

It's no big deal to put it in. Use it until you get tired of it then put in the 2.5. I'm running my 2.5 on the 1.8 sensors, etc. and it doesn't run perfectly, but WAY better than the 1.8 I had. I can imagine with the 2.2 being closer in displacement to the 1.8, it should run even smoother than the 2.5 does on the 1.8 ecu.

Ditto on it being no big deal. You could easily do it in a short afternoon if you have the right tools.

what doesn't run perfectly about it?

swapping the motor or swapping the ECU?

swapping the motor or swapping the ECU?

Either, but I was referring specifically to the engine. I did mine in 10 hours, including making runs for food, exhaust manifold gaskets, a sawzall then an air compressor (stripped an engine mount), and I had to swap the intake manifold and harness from the 1.8 to the 2.2.

The powerband is not as smooth, there are two areas on mine where when you hammer the pedal, it runs more lean. Its no big deal though if you get accustomed to it.

Get some Delta cams ground for the Ej22 while it's still out of the car. You can't spend $175 a better way on power for an Ej22...

I think you missed the point... And those delta cams wont exactly make it into a performance engine for a rally car.

i got what you were saying, as the rules say for Rally America in production GT, the engine must remain stock, nothing more then a stock rebuild. this would include any kind of after market cams, pistons, even headers.

But i still might look into it. if i run in the open class you can do what ever you want to it. True, yes i will get my ass handed to me but its all about the fun of it, not winning. kind of hard to be competitive in a NA open class car.

Oh, I miss read what you posted... I thought you were being sarcastic about the rally car comment, not that it was going to be a rally car :p
