I'm driving home on the freeway, speed limit is 60 and I'm doing about 63. A little further along the freeway ends and the speed limit becomes 45. I have my cruise control set at 63 mph in my 2000 RS. I hit the brakes and push the clutch in to slow to 45 and down shift to fourth gear. I reset the cruise before my clutch is released at 45 mph. I had the music loud but noticed my rpm's rise to 6500 and stay there. It took me a second before I figured out to hit the brakes to stop the revving.
What the hell happened? This shouldn't happen. Afterward, I tried several times to reproduce this and I couldn't. Has this happened to anyone else or can anyone explain why this happened?

there are 2 switches on the clutch pedal...one is the neutral safety switch and the other is the clutch pedal saftey switch(cuts out the cruise) sounds like that switch might be sticking.

HndTch627,
Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll have the dealership check it out. Do you mean there are two different points on the clutch pedal? I mean, two different points at which, depending on how far the clutch is depressed, these things "kick in?"

The switch that engages when you push the clutch all the way down is the start switch.
The switch that engages when you push the clutch a little is the cruise cutout switch. I think it is on top of the pedal and replaces the old backstop that was there.

But he said he hit the brakes also. Even if the clutch switch was faulty, the cruise control should cease with braking, no?

good point....but i am not positive if the switches are in parallel or series...definitely worth having checked out though.

Can you reproduce the problem? If not it's going to be harder to get it fixed, if so then take it to the dealer and have a tech look at it. See if you can reproduce it (don't let it rev that high for no reason for long of course).
If you can reproduce the problem, try some different variations to get more information on what will stop it and what won't. Do you have to go as far as killing the ignition to stop it? I would do some tests before I had it looked at, but if it doesn't happen again and you can't reproduce it I wouldn't worry about it as it could have been a fluke but from the sound of it that definitely shouldn't have happened.

When it first happened I tried to grab the gas pedal with my foot. My first reaction was that the pedal was stuck under my mat. When that didn't work I hit my brake pedal and that stopped it. I tried to reproduce it but have been unable to. Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll wait and see and hope it doesn't happen again.
