I've heard a lot of tuners don't reccomend a short ram because it pulls hot air from inside the engine bay, not really a good thing. But there are a lot of guys that run them.
if u get the heat sheild with the intake.. you'll be fine.. that just happens because people dont always get the heatsheilds with the intake because they are not recomemded so the intake pulls hot air from inside the engine bay.. instead of the heatsheild blocking that hot air..

The temperature of the air is less of a concern than the unpredictability regarding MAF scaling and fueling. Short-rams (and any aftermarket intake) flow differently than the factory airbox, and messed up fueling is usually the result, until properly tuned for. Air temperatures when moving/rolling are neglible.
The heatshields don't do much -- if anything, sheilds to protect the intake from the radiator fans causing turblence would be the most beneficial.
Unless you plan to get tuned or have the knowledge/equipment to tune it yourself, intakes are best suited to cars that *need* them. In other words, if you are using a TMIC, use the factory airbox :)
EDIT: Just wanted to answer some of the questions in this thread and bump for a good deal
