View Full Version : what's with the sudden "stock airbox removal" obsession?

 <-----

why do people keep asking about this? unless you're putting a cobb or ganzflow on your car, any intake that eliminates that stock airbox WILL KILL YOUR LOW END. yes it's ugly and doesn't look as cool as a big honking cone filter, but would you rather have more racket, or more performance?

you are not driving a honda. torque is your friend. all hail torque. without it, you've removed your car's advantage.

end rant.

umm, from what I've been seeing, people are removing their ail silencer box, not the air plenum box right above the throttle body. Removing the air silencer box allows more air to come in directly, increasing air flow and better noise. And yes I personally think it's not a good idea to remove the air plenum box unless you get the COBB CAI or the compass motorsports CAI, who both have done a great job in retaining low end torque produced by the absense of the air plenum box.

i ghetto moded mine....the stock filter box is still there witha piece of 2"(soon to be 3" piping to the fender well...knocked down a little bit of that flat spot the MY00-01's are notorious for.

Mine's a Ramen-spec mod too. 2 pieces of exhaust piping and 2 rubber couplers from home depot. Yee haw.

Indeed many people have removed or modified their air plenum box. I have even seen one guy remove half of the box and turn it so that it was oriented like a TMIC. It looked cool but it must have destroyed his low end torque. Also removing the silencer doesn't really do anything in terms of performance. So instead of killing low end torque and making your intake louder it just makes your intake louder.

I made a 3" inlet into the factory airbox and installed a K&N panel filter. This mod helped a little bit on the low-end but made a big difference on the top-end!

Seems like there are alot of peeps out there making their own intakes. I have some plastic piping from Crown and a K&N filter. It did hurt my low-end torque, but when I got my catback exhaust it really helped clear that up. Now it's onto headers and a free-flow cat...

keep the black box on top of the throttle body, it's called a torque chamber for good reason.

anything upstream of that, especially if you have a MY00+ with no air flow sensor in the way, is fair game.

unless you're a fluid dynamicist building a custom intake (probably with an even larger airbox) or have forced induction, don't touch the torque chamber.

Subarumantoo is using a GanzFLow V5 intake with Stage II airbox upgrade - found at www.ImprezaRS.com/products.htm

It works great, and heinsulated it with drink Koozies to keep the tubing cooler!

I don't think it's a torque chamber at all, the plenum box seems to be just another silencer. The reason it's threre is to mute the intake a bit and to keep costs down by using a panel filter. That's my theory... If someone can scientificly prove me wrong I might change my mind. In the Subaru Manual I don't think it's reffered to as the torque-box

This is the most complete explanation of the "black box," the I can give. It comes from reading posts on the subject.

In most cars, the intake runners are directly preceded by a plenum chamber (which is usually part of the intake manifold) which the throttle body attaches to. This plenum serves as a reservoir for air on most engines, not just Subies.

On the boxer engine, you have a set of intake runners which are preceded by the throttle body (I'm guessing because of limitations in space and layout of the engine). In an attempt to preserve the benefits of the intake plenum on an engine, the designers developed this "torque box," which is just a plastic version of the intake plenum chamber that attaches before the throttle body as opposed to after it.

It's really hard to describe without a picture.

Believe what you want, I believe Trey.
