Any trouble with the starter or leaks? You might be able to have it welded.

Wow. That's not good. Time for a new tranny or perhaps a new bell housing if you can source it.

You can't change the bellhousing on the 5mt, it's all one piece.

However... it is made out of cast aluminum, so you could have the crack welded, most likely without having to take it out of the car. Ask around local shops and see who has an aluminum welder.

It's pretty tough to crack a bellhousing while it's bolted on. This could be a casting defect. It's more and more rare these days, but it does happen once in a blue moon.

just got it back from teh dealer, warranty is up :(
they said it's drivable and to just get it welded and it should hold up just fine.
i have no idea how it happened and nor does the dealership, they think who eveer replaced teh clutch (previous owner) screwed in the starter too tight or something and it cracked it.
i'm looking around for local welders, will update soon!
...maybe that's why i get a whiny sound related to speed???.....

Sounds like a bearing. Rear output shaft maybe.

I think you'd have to REALLY overtighten that to make that happen... hmm. Surprised you wouldn't rip the threads out of the aluminum block before that happened since that's what the starter bolts go into.

Compromised case might mean the front diff is now out of alignment and whining as the ring and pinion start chewing at each other. If you drain the trans fluid, are there a lot of metal filings on the drain plug?

well, can't front a 6spd but found a good used 5spd, so once that's in, the VF34 and all can go in and i'll be :D

My master tech said theres something fishy about that transmission... You said you bought the car used?

Might have lost a dowl pin or pushed it through causing a stress point.

was the car ever crashed?

looks like maybe the pitch stop was doing its job during a front end collision

<---enginerd, heh.

It also doesn't hurt that I tore up my front diff. Myself and a few other people guess it was either a front diff or output shaft bearing because the whine was speed related. The "lightweight" front diff confirmed that the diff had swallowed 1st gear synchro teeth (we found synchro teeth sitting loose in the bottom of the case) spread and permanently deformed the cases. High loading on the gears at a track event and the diff torqued itself out of alignment and started eating itself.

that sounds painful

WOW!

That's quite the trick. Perhaps whoever changed the clutch didn't draw the bolts down evenly with things hung up.

^ nah. If that happened his friction disc, input shaft, input shaft bearings, brake plate would be fubared and the car wouldn't run. Hmm...wonder how I know this...

Input shaft is mis-aligned due to the crack. All of those parts are at risk. I've changed a few (BMW) trannys in my younger years. Now I pay a trusted shop to do the work. PDX Tuning last fall...
