View Full Version : Low Speed Grinding while braking

Hi all,

After all the info that I have received by searching the board, I have hit a problem that I can't find. So here's the deal:

My car is emiting a grinding noise (similar to braking when there is surface rust on the rotors) from the rear end when I apply the brakes under 10mph. It doesn't happen every time and I can't figure out how to reproduce it 100%. Braking from all other speeds is fine, but when I drop down below 10 it builds up and gets quite loud. Releasing the brakes makes the noise reduce significantly.

I suspected the worst and replaced the differential fluid early (normally replaced every 30-35k, I was at 25k) and found very very fine metal slivers, nothing bigger than a fine grain of sand.

So help me out Suby mechanics, whats the deal?

Nobody has seen this? Could it be a bad CV? Dragging brake pad?

There is a howler on the stock pads telling you that you are at the wear limit for the rear brakes. Under light braking the rears are biased more than the front. You wore them out first. Change the rear pads.

Been there.

Web,

Could it really be that simple? If it is, I definitely am coming out to Portland and buying you a beer. I'll be checking that out tonight, thanks bud.
