View Full Version : 2002 Subaru WRX to STi swap
4thgenlude 03-29-2007, 04:01 PM Okay what all is involved in this swap. I know that motor mounts and trans are the same, but what else will just bolt up??
I have an 2002 WRX, and My buddy that works at a junkyard has a rolled over STi for me for pretty cheap too!!
Is it at all possible to simply swap the entire drivetrain, wiring harness and ECU, and just be done??
OR what else will I need to do?
Thanks ALOT!

anthonywrx 03-29-2007, 04:07 PM i would do some serious searching on here, you can find most of your answers in previous threads about the similar setup. you'll be looking at a wiring harness to run the AVCS, along with some other random parts. a lot of people have done this, so don't give up. what year STi is it? overall it shouldn't be that bad, just a lot of time and effort

Thanks for the reply!
Its an 04 STi, If I simply remove the complete drivetrain with wiring harness and everything, I will still need to wire in stuff??

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but if you swap literally EVERYTHING into your car, including all the wiring harnesses, ecu, etc, you should be ok. again, i would still search to see if there is an easier.
ImprezaWrx9 03-29-2007, 06:54 PM I was wondering the same question because i'm going to be doing the exact same thing to my car. I was wondering if everything in the picture besides the engine, tranny, and ecu is what is needed for the swap.

eastcoastbumps 03-29-2007, 07:12 PM You do not need to swap the wiring harnesses if you are putting a JDM V7 into a bug-eye. They are plug and play, with the exception of AVCS. IA Performance sells an AVCS wiring kit for that swap.

If you have an USDM 04 sti as a donor, take the harness and the sensors, all the control units, everything you possibly can and that will reduce your wire splicing. Garage tuning will do just a harness although i dont know the details.
Also, take the gas tank.
I didnt see a shifter assembly in the pic either (although im gonna assume its with the tranny).
4thgen, you will need to wire headlights since your going 02-04. Get some JDMs though and youll be able to use the leveling switch.
4thgenlude 03-29-2007, 09:22 PM okay pardon me for being a completle scooby noobie, but do subaru's only have 1 wiring harness? Or do they have a seperate harness for the engine, and body stuff?
If its just one harness, I might as well just use my stock wiring harness and then just add a few wires for the AVCS, does that sound right?
4thgenlude 03-29-2007, 09:56 PM okay I searched around a bit for the AVCS harness on iaperformance . com but I couldnt find anything!
Does anyone have a link, or am I searching on the wrong site?
4thgenlude 03-30-2007, 02:08 PM okay so aparently the donor car is an 06 not an 04!
My buddy told me it was an 04, and when he finaly sent me some pics of it, it definitly has the new sexy front end.
Are there major differences going from an 02 wrx to 06 sti in terms of wiring?
Carreragt2e 03-30-2007, 03:03 PM im curious, why swap the gas tank?
4thgenlude 03-30-2007, 06:30 PM im curious, why swap the gas tank?
I think I read somewhere that it has various sensors that arent on the regular gas tank, and its just easier to swap the whole assembly, rather than just the sensors themselves.
Im probably wrong though.;)

Subaru integrates the body and engine harnesses. Its not like a lot of other cars that have a completely independent engine harness. However there are connectors where the harness branches to the engine. These are only helpful when removing and reinstalling the same engine.
It will be far easier to swap everything from the STi if you get a hold of the complete car. Then you can use the entire STi harness, gas tank, dash, cluster, DCCD, climate control, cruise control, throttle by wire, etc. (They're all different.)
Like I mentioned earlier, swapping in a JDM V7 into a bug eye is plug and play and is far easier than a USDM STi swap. But if you have a lead on a complete USDM car, go for it.

4thgenlude 03-30-2007, 08:04 PM okay so if I just used the harness on the bugeye, what all would I need to wire in, to get everything working right?
Im assuming the AVCS, and DCDD, anything else?
The thing is I really do not want to tear the entire dash apart to get the whole harness out of my current car. Is it possible to just use the wiring harness in the bug eye and then simply swap ECU's and wire in the AVCS and DCDD?

The harnesses are completely different. Its not just a few accessories that you can drive the car without, like AVCS or DCCD. The throttle doesn't have a cable, (its fly by wire) so you have to swap in the STi gas pedal and wire that in. Cruise control will have to be wired in too. The STi ECU connector is a 4 plug, the WRX has a 5 plug. I'm not sure what else would have to be wired in, but its a lot of ****. Its easier to remove the STi harness and accessories and just swap everything. And then you'll have the cooler STi dash, cluster, and climate control...all with less work.

I agree with you on this, b/c I have an 04 sti swap with the stock wrx steering rack and I drove my friends sti and it doesn't feel the same.
