View Full Version : sti hp?
wrxblu02 12-10-2001, 12:42 PM If we do get the sti in the us what do you think the horsepower will be? Do you think it`s worth waiting for or should i just go ahead and upgrade my wrx? AS i would most likly trade it in,or sell it. thanks.
I would bet that it would be an exact duplicate of the sti type uk. I thinks its 264hp. modding a wrx is much more of a viable option in my mind since you dont have to pay the outrageous insurance sure to be charged for the sti. The only thing i would want is the vvt and 6-speed, but i can live without it. Catback, unichip, and cai will make a standard wrx as fast or faster than a sti. But you still have to mod suspension cause it completly sux stock. but thats alot of money. 17's and good rubber along with coilovers will run around 5 grand, plus another grand for performance mods, so your looking around 30 to 31 grand total to get a wrx in the same catagory. But you will be saving 5 grand or so under the msrp fo an sti and you dont get f@#ked on the insurance
Check the News and Rumors forum for tons of STi info. Some even claim to know the price and date ;)

topher 12-11-2001, 01:10 AM yeah, definitely check the rumors forum. and the japanese STI is 276bhp.
Steve-oWRX 12-11-2001, 02:51 AM my guess is they make the STi around 250-255hp. they will probably take the WRX and reprogram the ECU, upgrade the exhaust, upgrade intercooler piping, induction kit. As for looks, maybe offer the WRC headlights, new spoiler, new tires/rims, higher hood scoop, minor interior changes. Any more than that, and youre looking at spending 30k+ for the car. I don't think many people would be willing to shell out BMW/S4 money. Just mod the regular WRX IMO

wrxblu02 12-11-2001, 02:01 PM Thank you all for your input:D
Julian 12-11-2001, 02:34 PM What Steveo describes is just a modded WRX, which really isn't what the STi is. If that's all Subaru brings to the States, they'll have a hard time selling them. There are people who want the full STi and will pay the full STi price for it.
Getting a WRX to out-drag an STi won't be hard, and will be reasonably cheap. Getting a WRX to STi-level completeness will be a foolish waste of money.
HP levels, aside from our crappy gas, there's no reason to see less than any other country. Emissions issues are shared with the UK, and if they're getting the full monty...heck, we get more power in the WRX than they do.

Aside from what I said, what else would the STi have to offer?
Julian 12-11-2001, 07:18 PM better seats, bigger Brembo brakes, uprated suspension, intercooler spray, center tach dash, 6-speed tranny, adjustable center diff, actual resale value, HIDs...
shirokuma 12-11-2001, 10:46 PM This is from a member in Japan, so apologies if the pricing is off, but
A U.S. WRX is around 24grand? And the STI rumored to be 30grand?
So, what you get over the standard WRX:
Brembo brakes front and rear: $2-$3 grand aftermarket
6-speed tranny: price unknown, but 2-3 grand again, minimum
Bigger wheels to go over those brakes: 1-2 grand, minimum
STI suspension: another 1-2 grand, minimum
STI engine/intercooler: 3-5 grand, minimum
STI seats(2 front): 1-2 grand
There's more than that, but at minimum, to match an STI's equipment level, you'd be paying at least 10 grand. Now, if you don't want that equipment, that's fine - there's still the base WRX to build on. But you do get your money's worth for your cash.

Thats simply the advertised bhp, due to that "gentlemens agreement."
It could be as much as 300 bhp.
The last version of the GC8 STi(Version 6) was known to have 290-300 hp, so why downgrade it?
topher 12-12-2001, 01:59 AM I just said it because that is what every spec sheet on the STI states it as.

No man! the STI 6-speed alone is 6 grand! with all the parts you need to swap it, it comes to about $8-9K! I've already priced it out. That alone puts it into the $30K territory. BTW, the WRX is $24.5K msrp with no options (includes dest).

Ouch. Though that's about what I expected, was just being optimistic.
Basically, having bought a different Subaru (a tt B4 legacy) and having modified it a bit already, I came to the realization that the STI rex is a great deal. The various bits and pieces on it are very expensive to get bit by bit, but are cheap as a whole.
Now if only it was a little larger...

anotherB4 12-13-2001, 12:09 AM Be warned, Pauly has 2 kids (well 1.8 right now ;) ) and is having problems coming to the realisation that he needs a wagon :D
Now, there is an STI wagon here - it just misses out on the brakes and tyres. Then again, he could look at the GT-B e-tune too.
Back to the topic though - WADR to the lovers of the Evo, the STI is a much more honest car. It runs on normal road tyres that you can atually buy (well, at least all models but the new type C) and does not rely on trick electronics for it's prefomrance, just good solid design based on the fundamentals. The rest is up to the driver.
The value in the STI is hard to put down in a post - the engine is a monster and virtually none of the important bits are carried over. The 6 speeder is a gem, and the body is genuinely strong and designed by someone who cares that their product protects the occupants (as we know nothing is infallible). Those Brembos are serious weapons and haul the car down from speed very well indeed.
Ok - it is not an Audi (IMHO THANK GOODNESS!!). And if that is what you want, go for it.
Eneryone else will enjoy the Scoobies and pocket the difference.
Enjoy.
