View Full Version : Synic EL Header on WRX
ImpreziveWRX 03-30-2007, 02:57 AM Just want to write a quick review on the Synic EL Header.
Most of you probably have already seen the picture of the product.
It is the one very similar to Fujitsubo header.
When I got it off the box, first thing I noticed is how light is it compare to stock cast iron. I would say it saves about 20 pounds in your front end.
Header comes with gasket and bolts. I purchased new OEM gasket just to be safe.
I have the header wrap with the newest Thermo Tec Copper wrap and copper wrap spray.
Installation is very easy. Took me about an hour total for removing the stock one and put the Synic one on the car. I am not expert just to let you know, I can't even do the oil change right but I can install this header properly w/o any problem.
Fitment is great, no leak at all. It is been a month now and so far so good.
Only thing you have to keep in mind is that there is a radiator hose/fan heat shield located under the radiator fan. This heat shield needs to be removed before installing the header. The heat shield is held on with three 10mm socket screws. If you keep the heat shield on, the header will touch it and send the vibration though out the car.
Other than that is is a great product that worth the money.
Also, for the 2.0L WRX, we can keep our 2.0L Oil Pan! Yayyyyyy!
No need to spend the extra $90 for the 2.5L
Here is a short clip for the exhaust note on YouTube for your enjoyment.

+1
Really nice!!!
ImpreziveWRX 03-30-2007, 05:53 AM Promotional price @ $600
Its pretty expensive piece, but I like it.
Compare to $1000+ for a Fujitsubo
I can feel it on butt dyno too, power band becomes very smooth.
Specially when I have a 4EAT, I get on ramp all the way to 80MPH with very smooth power after the header installed. (No kick down, just regular drive)
Imagine what it can do with stick...
I am waiting for another tune, hopefully with a dyno too.
illmatic 03-31-2007, 04:17 AM I think the weight savings are worth the mod. Combined with a lighteweight bumper beam and battery would take off a good amount off the front end.
djerickd 04-08-2007, 07:54 PM I'm trying to get one of these did you happen to have any detail pics?

Ahh ignorance is bliss I guess.
I ordered mine and they should be here by the end of the week. Im going to instal them and get re-tuned on Aug. 5th so we will see how it goes. Any updates on leaks or other failures?
djerickd 07-26-2007, 02:33 PM cool, looking forward to your review!
PolarisSnT 07-30-2007, 04:49 AM Ok here it is, just got done putting them on my car. Took a little longer because some bolts were rusted and a major pita.
There is the good and the bad to this product. Ill start with the bad:
1. Fitment is so-so at best. It relies heavily on the flex sections to line up correctly with the driver side head and I was less than thrilled to see that. I had to cut a plastic nib off of the radiator fan shrouding which took a few seconds with a tiny hack saw.
2. The diameter of the tubing is very small. Tiny actually. I dont know why this is like that but I would like an explanation because the primaries on my stock set are bigger especially since they are ported.
3. Finally, I did not like how the flanges were not welded inside and out. They were welded on the inside but just tacked on the outside.
Good news:
1. Car sounds freakin sweet. I have a TurboXS stealth back with a Prodrive oval tip and its like sex on wheels. It is still deep and does not sound like a honda at all. Maybe an Evo but definatly still has that Subaru sound to it.
2. Car got quiter, so quiet that with the windows up I can barely hear the exhaust. With the windows down it sounds so nice.
3. Car feels smoother all over. Revs freely and idles very very nicely.
4. So far no leaks and I used the supplied gaskets so we will see how that turns out.
If I think of anything else Ill be sure to write about it.
djerickd 07-30-2007, 05:23 PM Are the flex sections really flexing alot to fit?
PolarisSnT 07-30-2007, 06:23 PM They had to make up for about an 1/8th inch of space in order for the flange to fit over the studs. The middle hole lined up but the outer 2 had to be persuaded on.
djerickd 07-30-2007, 06:33 PM ok cool, I bet it feels good on the 1820!! u getting a retune?
PolarisSnT 07-31-2007, 01:16 AM Feels great so far. Nice and smooth.
Unfortunatley my clutch started to go on the way home in 3rd gear when I hit the gas so my retune will have to wait.
crazymikie 11-16-2007, 12:27 PM I'm sorry to report that I've now had two different failures with two different Synic headers-
One cracked right at the collector where all four primaries come together:
http://mikeschear.com/synic/IMG_0526.JPG
They prompty sent me another one to replace this one and 6 months later, I find that there's a leak coming from one of the flex joints.
I've been trying to get this resolved via email and phone and still haven't gotten any sort of resolution to date. I've put a set of ported stock manifolds back on the car now with a larger diameter crossover pipe and don't feel like I've lost too much power. I'd compare some logs, but I don't know how long the header was leaking for (I just replaced did a motor swap and recently got the car moving again).
Spool is better with the stock manifolds on my current setup, but the header was better with my previous setup, so I think it was leaking ever since it was installed on this motor.
djerickd 11-16-2007, 01:02 PM dang that sucks...
djerickd 07-16-2008, 12:19 AM I got mine on now review is like the above so I copied and pasted some from above

sjs0433 07-16-2008, 02:16 PM did you retune for it^ or can you pretty much get away without having to retune? I'm sure you don't get all the benefits without a retune but will things run smoothly/safely?
djerickd 07-16-2008, 02:53 PM not yet, I already had a header so my tune can't be that far off.. I'm not driving at WOT all day tho
After I get my hydrogen injection going I'll get it tuned up for max efficiency down low and max power on boost.
