I've been reading up and am still reading but can't seem to make the decision.

I have 41k on my odo and have read that synthetic is better on your car. I've also read that it's not a good idea to switch over at high mileage.

So confused.. I've leaned towards switching over but am still having worries.

Is 41k considered too high to make the switch?

Thanks for the confirmation. I didn't know you could have it analyzed. I'll check that out.

Edit: your url is wrong. it's: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ =)

Are you the first owner? If you have owned your car since new, which took you five years to put 41k on it, I wouldnt switch to synthetic.

After blowing up my motor switching to synthetic last week I don't think I'll ever be able to do it to another car again. (Its not really the synthetic to blame but it was certainly a factor, freed up crud blocked an oil passage, spun a bearing) I've got two more high mileage cars running dino in the driveway and they'll run dino until the end of their days now.

As in all things your mileage may vary.

You think 41K is high-mileage? You must be new to Subarus.

I am the second owner. Previous owner was/is a mechanical engineer or w/e and had many other "toys". I've put about 4-5k (including a 1k trip) on it since owning it since mid Jan.

That sounds scary but I can't imagine that happening in my case. The previous owner took very good care of it (really you should see my car, looks new) and I've done nothing but baby it so far.. :disco:

Yes I am new to Subarus. I moved over from the Honda camp. I didn't mean high mileage as in OMG 3xxk but I noticed most people switch to synthetic right after their breakin period. I was trying to see if it would be ok @41k.

I ended up going to quick lube place (I'm away from home w/o tools). They didn't have any synthetic on hand so I went with the non synth 5w30. I think I'll switch to synthetic next time.

Thanks for posting

There is no time when its "too old" to switch to synthetic. Its a myth.

Whats also a myth is "you cant switch back and forth between Synthetic and Dino oil"

However, you might notice a tiny bit more oil consumption. But you check that every gas tank anyway.

On my car I went full synthetic at 70, at 75 I did dino, 80 I did synthetic, 85 I did a 50/50 cocktail, and at 90 (yesterday) Im using the 50/50 cocktail of Mobil1 and Mobil 5000

According to Mobil, this is nothing to worry about. They do make an oil specifically for high mileage vehicles switching off of conventional (I believe it's called Mobil 1 High Mileage) which supposedly has more detergents and things to clean out residue, but I personally haven't used it. They also more or less say that normal Mobil 1 should be fine, so I doubt they're that different.

I don't think i would worry about it either, at 41k your just breaking the motor in good. I knew a subaru mechanic that told me he has seen the honing hashmarks in subaru cylinder walls as late as 30k..!!!!!

If you are worried, you might consider doinga Auto-RX clean before switching... search Auto-RX, both here and the interwebpornonet...

I would run Auto-RX (also check the forums at bobistheoilguy.com) and then use a 40 weight synthetic. I wouldn't use a 30 weight in So. Ca. unless it's ACEA A3 rated.
