View Full Version : I have 17x8.5 wheels that don't fit on my GC8 what should I do?
scobaru 03-31-2007, 05:27 PM I traded my Wheels for some 17x8.5 advan RGII's with 255's as expected they didn't fit in the rear because the tire was to big and rubbed on the strut. I was going to go with a 235 instead so it wouldn't rubb but it loks like the rim is most likely touching the strut also.
So should I...
Sell them and pick up 17x8's and go with 235's?
or run spacers and run a little bit of negative camber and keep the 255's
I autoX my car and I'm going to do a few track day's this season.
I don't mind getting extended wheel studs if need be
Patrick L 03-31-2007, 05:33 PM Wheel spacers or buy some zzyzx coilovers.
thechickencow 03-31-2007, 06:15 PM I'd run spacers dan, unless they're not even close to fitting.
What's the offset on the wheels. How much you want for them?

wirolla 04-01-2007, 12:48 AM throw them in the garbage.
scobaru 04-01-2007, 01:21 AM I'll throw ur egg in the garbage:cool:
speedyHAM 04-01-2007, 02:08 PM Give them to me and start making your own decisions? Just a thought. I'll give you a nice set of WRX wheels for them.
AshyLarry 04-02-2007, 02:03 PM What suspension? Maybe upgrade to ground control style springs and cut off the spring perch?
Thran 04-02-2007, 02:09 PM all depends on the offset of the rims right now, but i would try the spacers then if not but its close get some negative chamber or get coilovers (they are much thinner) : P
i would keep those tires and rims due to autox wider the better!
scobaru 04-02-2007, 02:20 PM I have Tein flex but they arn't installed yet ((getting setn back from rebuilt)) I still suspect it's still going to rub due to where its touching the coilovers. but I've decided that i'm going to keep it for a few reasons. 1 of witch I've never seen 255's on a GC with out a wide body, less hassle to sell wheels and buy tires easier to just extended stud it and spacers
nKoan 04-02-2007, 03:47 PM I auto-x'ed once with a guy that had some +30 (give or take, I can't remember exactly) offset 17x9 wheels on a GC with like 275s on them.
He used tin snips on the fenders to fit the wheels
So, good luck.
Big_DeWeY 04-03-2007, 12:20 AM well if you decide to sell em PM me. I would be willing to run a spacer to make em fit.
bouse1 04-03-2007, 02:02 PM I have some 1/4" H&R spacers brand new if you need some, but sounds like you're gonna need thicker ones.
scobaru 04-03-2007, 03:28 PM I don't know what size I need yet I'll check once I get the coilovers on but i really don't need that much from what it looks like. but shoot me a price and I'll let u know when I know. all 4?
Th3Franz 04-04-2007, 05:07 AM What color? You should sell them to me.
JTJ 2.5 04-04-2007, 11:22 AM You'd be suprized how much room the coils free up. Without seeing it Id think you would be fine once they are installed.
scobaru 04-04-2007, 02:12 PM its not the pearch that is in the way its strut body it self that its touching. but I'm going to wait until I get my coilovers back to see what is in the way I'm calling tein usa to see if they got my payment yet.
I am in the process of fitting 17x8 with a 45 offset on the RS. I am running JIC coilovers. I have about 1.5-2mm of clearance between the wheel and the strut body. I am hoping a 3mm spacer will clear the tire (245 V710), but it may not. I will have to roll the fender, but I don't think cutting will be necessary.
Now, with a 8.5" wheel, you just reduced the clearance by ~6mm given the same offset. that would put the wheel in the strut...not going to happen. If you lower the offset to 35, you MAY be able to clear with 235s (tire width will not really be an issue until you go >245 due to the rim width). Not sure what spring rate you are using, but I am on 9k/9k and that may allow you to flare and not cut due to minimal suspension travel. if you are running any softer and I suspect you will rub, even with flared fenders. I don't see how you could flare enough to eliminate rubbing.
Anyway, I suggest selling the 8.5" and going with a 8", you will still be tight.

This is what the car evolved into after that event.

^ Where did you source the flares? :disco:

Nice! Hope you guys make it up to the Squaw Valley event again this year (and maybe other Reno events too).
waktasz 04-04-2007, 10:17 PM ^^ That is amazing.
