Thanks to Dave @ Oakos for getting it shipped to me in record time and Suby Specialties (http://www.subyspecialties.com) for installing it and sourcing all the necessary parts for converting over to the new style radiator.

It did cost a pretty penny but my cooling system has essentially been "bulletproofed". It's a Koyo Full Aluminum Race Radiator with welded aluminum endtanks.

oooooh, aaaaaahhh.

Very nice, so nice, the water spots are annoying. Is this Koyo different from the regular aluminum one (from Koyo), or same?

I believe there's two koyo variants, a regular one with plastic crimped on endtanks with identical dimensions to the OEM radiator and a full aluminum one seen above.

....nice. Glad to see you got it fixed. I may need to go that route if mine craps out again.

do you, or anyone else know about getting a new radiator cap to increase the pressure. How effective is it and are there any risks or down-sides? I have a 97 OB that I tend to drive hard at higher elevations. any help would be nice. . .

^^^^Are you overheating?

OP-- Hmmm, thats right, could you run the sti caps now (silicone lower hose replaced?)?

yeah, I over heated . . . I was driving hard in the mtns around mt Shasta and my temp gage read normal. When i stopped for gas radiator fluid was boiling over. when I pulled away my gage imediatly shot all the way hot, I continued driving, slowly through town, looking for a shop. by the time I got to one the temp gage was normal and they couldnt find anything wrong. I continued on my road trip to So Cal and back to Portland, OR with the temp staying normal the whole way. I am taking it to my shop tomorrow to have them look at it. . . any thoughts? I have 159000 mi on it.

If I run an sti cap, do I need to replace the hoses too?

I am not an expert, I do know ppl were tossing sti caps on to their stock WRXs and blowing open their cooling system. Smaller hoses generally have higher PSI capacity. Replacing the plastic (WRX) radiator and hoses have been the prerequistes for an STI cap.

You are doing the right thing taking it in to get it checked out. They will probably (or ask for) a pressure test. I'm sure you know about the older Legacy head problems, so if you replace the coolant, make sure you flush and get any recommended Subaru additive for your year/make/model car.
