I put an RS shifter in my Legacy about a week ago. It is much nicer than stock, but now the shift boot hangs down into the hole in the console about 2". I am guessing that the RS boot is shorter since the lever is.
Thanks, Doug

I have a 98 RS and I got tired of the lame "accordian" style shift boot so I picked up one of the leather ones. Even on my RS it hangs down a little. not two inches but still sages some. Im not sure if its the same deal on the newer RSs though.....

I've got an '01, it hangs down pretty good. Enough that it will get doubled up and you can loose a quarter in there, like if you put it in 5th, the boot bunches up on the right side.
I'm not sure if it's leather or pleather, but I don't think that's what you're asking...

I've got an '01 RS with a Kartboy lever and a Momo knob that dropped the total height of my shifter about 1.5" or so, and I haven't noticed any sagging yet. The top of my boot isn't attached to anything either, but it stays almost snug with the bottom of the knob. The Kartboy is a thicker lever, if I recall, and that might have something to do with it.
I do believe that it's pleather. The underside has too much of a canvas look to be real. http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif

The 1998 RS has a rubber accordian boot, and the 99 and up boot is leather.

The boot on my 2002 RS shifter also sags a bit. It's no big deal, but it's kind of annoying in that it's constantly catching dust and dirt.

Mine is pretty bad now with the much shorter RS shifter. It sagged a bit before (necessary to allow movement in all directions I suppose), but now you could probably store a good sized handful of M&Ms in there. Mine is stitched vinyl, and I was hoping that maybe RS' had a shorter leather boot that would work. It would be very tough to neatly shorten one (lots of intricate stitching).
