yeah, the only way id take this car is if i got it for free....

I wouldn't even take it for free because I'd have to pay gift tax on it.

What da?

Those tail lights on the hatchback look like they came from Pep Boys...

The sedan rear is better, IMO.

That front is gonna need to be redone ASAP for the STi.

Might be time for a BMW 335 turbo...

So what makes it a "hatchback" and not a wagon? Or do they just label it a hatchback in hopes of better sales? Not that it would help.... UG

Reminds me of a lot of high school/college kids. For some reason they have to have a "mean, aggressive" looking car to show how tough they are or something. Funny part is, every time I look over to see the driver, 9 times out of 10 it's some scrawny little dork that looks llike he lives in his parents basement. lol. The new version looks fine and is a big improvement over the pig snout grill or the 2002 Dodge Neon with a hood scoop joke. With more main stream styling Subaru will sell a lot more of these to people who don't want to be associated with boy racer high school kids. I'll bet you they sell more of these than last years version.

I see what you're saying and you may be right, they probablly will appeal more to a wider audience. and it does look "fine". But if you're going buy a "sports"/rally car, you not only want it to perform like one. but to look like one. And if you dont want to be associated with boy racer high school kids, then provide an option for it not make it the only option. I like that when I park and take a look back, I think, "damn thats a good looking car." There's nothing wrong with liking the way your car looks above the norm. In addition: Who are you to judge or psycoanalyze if someone is a "dork" or needs to feel tough based on their weight, looks and usumption of living status. I for the record am 30, 180lbs and have my own home and can honestly say, have no need to feel tough. So I dont fit your stereotype. Just appreciate a "mean, aggresive" looking car.
Thank you,
Thants all I have to say about that

How interesting. Actually I believe he has a perfect right to judge and "psycoanalyze" (sic) anyone he cares to. After all how else did we humans arrive here after tens of thousands of years if we didn't size up the SOB in the next cave to see if he was some kind of threat or not. On the subject of aggressive cars you have to wonder at why we invest so much of our egos in how a vehicle looks. It's no wonder that young people do care about it a lot because they haven't secured their place in society yet. So the tough, mean looking car can be seen as an expression of insecurity. Most of us don't grow up enough to lose all of that insecurity so we hang on to the, "I'll never buy a mini-van" notion until the imperative for sliding doors and a DVD player in back comes wailing into our lives with poopy diapers. But before that time arrives it all comes down to, do you like the way it looks and performs enough to spend your money on it? I'm betting that Subaru will do just fine with the new Imprezas and that the aggressive need will be easily met by the new STI. Ummm' fender flares, big brakes under 18 inch wheels, alloy hood and control arms, 330 horsepower!

The sloping rear glass. Wagons like ours have a more spacious and usefull rear. Wagons have a more vertical rear window and a flatter roofline. Wagons actually have a better reputation than "hatchbacks." Automakers think hatchback implies cheap econo-car in the U.S. This is why Celicas and Mustangs were called "Fastbacks" and Integra/RSXs and Eclipses were called "Coupes" even though they were hatchbacks. Mazda calls the 3 a 5-door instead of a hatchback. The Civic and Focus don't even bring their hatchbacks to the U.S. anymore. Meanwhile, the Golf/Rabbit/GTi, Mazda 3, and Mini Cooper keep on selling. This is how dumb automakers are.

at very least bug eye and peanut eye kept their 'rally ' heritage, so even if you didn't like them, at very least they stayed true to the 'WRX' and 'STI' name sake. The current model and more to the point this new version completely and utterly abandons it's heritage. It's now more ford and kia then it is 'WRX'.. and for that reason I won't be buying another one any time soon. Maybe if at some point when I'm in my 70's, loose my sense good taste and for some reason decide that a frontal lobotomy is a good idea, I'd get one.. maybe.

To everyone who was telling me to wait for the 08,..all I godda say is, this thing looks like your grandmas Saturn L200. Suck it easy. I bought my 07 STI in the beginning of March, before I had a solid idea of what the 08 was going to look like for sure, well there was all the photoshop renderings, but you can't bet on those. So after I bought mine I was sweating it a little thinking I shoulda waited. (pause) Sure am glad I diddn't wait!

I personally didn't like the new look when i first saw it. But now that i look at it some more. I think it looks hot.

The rear end and the sides of the car have very good lines. Just like they have for the last couple of years.

The only thing i don't like is the Front grill. But once you see the whole car in person and get a true perspective for the car as a whole. Then i'm sure i'll like it. After all, this was the way i felt about the 06+ grill.

I'm a Legacy GT owner and am narrowing down my next purchase to a 2008 A3 3.2 or the '08 STi. Is there any indication from Subaru NA other than 'more aggressive' regarding the look of the new STi?:(

i so agree with ya.

maybe mitsu is being so cool about their new lancer is because they dont run the WRC anymore(thats right, right?), so they dont need to make a rally car then turn it into a street car, they can just go straight to the bada$$ looking street car.. while subaru is stuck in WRC mode, making a fugly hatch that is somehow going to pull a miracle out of "only god knows whos" butt and win something...

Do you think they give a rats ass about NASIOC if they sell more cars? For every door that closes a new one one opens. Just because 20 kids on NASIOC complain doesn't mean thay they represent tha car buying public or even the typical Subaru buyer. For every kid who posts on NASIOC there are two or three people that would now consider this car when they wouldn't even look at the last version.

Official pics on Subaru's website. The intercooler looks tiny. They are calling the new rear suspension "Double-Wishbone." I'll believe it when I see it.

The side profile looks VERY MUCH like the BMW 1 series. It even has the shoulder line taken from the Z4 added to the BMW 1 series. God I hate this euro econo-car styling... Looks good on the 1 series, but that's because it's a BMW and it's their econo line.

Interior looks nice at least. The little slit where the clock used to go is integrated into the dash now and it looks like there's more than just a clock there now. If they're going to rip off BMW, I wish they'd rip-off BMW's 2 pod guages, instead of the tri-pod design. Funny how they dedicate an entire photo to show off the freakin' cup-holders! The backseats look much improved. FINALLY the damn sedan gets 60/40 folding seats.

I wonder if the JDM hates the new look as much as we do.

I picked up the new Motor Trend at the Grand Prix of Houston over the weekend.

My 11yr. old and my 14yr. old both looked the photo, turned to me and said, "Dad....looks like you better get an '07 STI or wait for the Evo X. This thing looks like a Mazdacorolladaewo."

I thought we were all going to cry. I PRAY that it looks better in person and that the STI will make me fall in love with the car again.

To me, it looks like just another Japanese econobox with a hood scoop. The saving grace could have been a significant increase in performance/handling, but only a test drive well tell. The car is marginally lighter, but I wonder if it's stiffer or if the brakes will be any good.

I'm an old man, but I have no desire to drive a Japanese Buick.

you know i think we are going about this all wrong, i for one am glad that the new WRX's look like crap. it makes our body style that much more desirable, and perhaps worth more. look at the 93-98 supras, in mint condition they are worth about as if they where new. im still holding out to see the new STi in person though. and im interested to see what it can do.

i herd from a somewhat unrelyable source that the new STi's are going to have a paddle shifting tranny any info on this?

Eh, not a fan. I just don't see the point of going wagon/hatch whatever you call it only on the Impreza line. Why? Well because Subaru has the:

(1) Forester
(2) Legacy
(3) Outback

All three of the above are wagons/hatches. Why does Subaru need to make another wagon??? Don't get me wrong I love wagons and own a FXT, but don't you guys think that 4 Wagon/hatch lines is a bit much??? What is the sedan lover to buy??? A Legacy GT? No thanks...I want my STI Sedan!

04-26-2007, 11:30 PM
Wow, you buy a lot of Imprezas. Question, what if the STI, which you haven't seen yet, has the good brakes, the fender flares, the alloy contol arms and 330hp? Will you still buy a Bimmer instead?

I'll have to see it when it comes out (in person  ) I hope that I could like it but the M Coupe really strikes a chord with me. Ideally, I would keep my '06 and either leave it alone stage 2 or mod the snot out of it. I like the minor refresh to the Legacy so that would make a good daily driver. Ah, but the M Coupe, that's kind of what I lust after, a pure unadultered driver's car.

i know that this has been said over and over, it's a corolla!!!!!:furious: :furious: . the exhaust is relocated to the right side, the windows have frames............ the round air vents are square......the hatch is a matrix........i hope subaru has the brains to do research, see all of our comments and burn all design info on the 2008. it is said the subaru customers buy a subaru because it's a subaru. not becuase it's pretty, or that it fits in with all the other cars. when i first saw the 06 i thought puke, it's a kia front. now that thing looks carmen electra hot. i know i'm just repeating what many others have said, but i had had haaad to get all this off my chest. i am very very dissapointed with subaru. even though it's probably a good yet risky business move on their part, you can't just take a big ol' turd (doo doo brown) on the loyal customers. my opinion is this: it is a sad, sad day for subaru and worse, it currnt customers. don't get me wrong, to each his own. but based on what i've seen all over the net, the majority is in the corner crying with me...sharing tissues....and hugging.

I hate my frameless windows. They squeek and I have to lower and raise them slightly every time I open and close a door or air whistles into the cabin. At least the Infiniti had the sense to have the window automatically do that for you.

The exhaust is on BOTH sides, not just on the right.

The 06 front is bad-ass. The 04-05 was the worst. Bland RSX rip-off.

Subaru is trying to go mainstream. They know we hate it and they don't care. (http://www.businessweek.com/autos/content/apr2007/bw20070425_732778.htm?campaign_id=rss_daily)

Man i love the frameless windows, i don't impale myself like on my wifes car. plus not every car has it. and maybe i like it since i don't have those problems  . i didn't see it on both sides, my mistake. but since you pointed it out, i don't like it. im not a fan of dual exhausts on a 4. but like i said, to each his own. i love the 04 05 fronts, they look mean as hell. the british car show guys topspeed said it best, when compairing the 05? evo and the sti. the evo is (bar scene) "excuse me sir, you spilled my pint". the sti "you...outside...NOW". yep, that's my fav saying.

Legacy Wagon is no longer available in the US (it is in Canada and elsewhere).

Where did you get that from? It says that nowhere on Subaru's site.

That has been confirmed by multiple SOA sources. They have not updated their crappy webpage yet with MY2008 Legacy info, but it's typical for them to update the page well after the cars are in the dealers lots.

Well, ugly or not, dealers are hurrying to clean up their lots for 2008s and sell 2007s really cheap. Guess how I know ;) Hint: look at my profile :))

I'm sorry, but if the STi comes looking like this:

I might get in line, even though I'd wish they made a sedan.. that might do.

just my personal opinion but I bought mine because of the WRC series, I love rallying. The car is reliable, fun to drive, and safe as heck. I love it because it looks like its ready to go into the woods and pick a fight with a bear. The 2008 looks like the first car you buy after you get out of college. It looks fine but it use to have a personality.

I really do not the 2008 model, the sedan looks like a corrola, and the hatch looks like a ford focus. Not my cup o' tea. The engine and drivetrain is probably wonderful, though.

How many wagon looking cars do Subaru need? To me it is similar to the Pontiac GTO. You couldn't tell it apart from the Grand Prix, Grand Am it was a grand mystery. Now the WRX is it an Outback, Forester what? Unless you really know your cars an outsider won't be able to tell.

If you seriously can't tell the difference between any of those cars you listed above then you suck at cars. Period.

Exactly. I am sick of that countryside school of thought: "consumer can't recognize...", "consumer can't tell apart". The same bull**** was brought vide demise of Legacy wagon and Outback sedan... "so consumer is not so confused"

F**k that consumer! He won't drive Subaru anyway!

Would be nice if they could make the STI a little (a lot :P) more aggressive. As a previous poster said, looks too much like a Taurus :(

The down fall I think that adds to this car not being so popular is the rims.
I super imposed a set of Tenzo's DC5 Charcoal Black and it did add alot of appeal. I have been trying to upload with no luck.

the worst part about the new wrx is the grill and rims, im not a fan of the car at all but i think it would look waaaaaaay better with a mesh grill and new rims, and a not so cheesy front bumper
