View Full Version : Older 5MT linkage update - finally!!!!
Turn in Concepts 04-03-2007, 06:21 PM We know that folks have been waiting for this for a very long time, and we are vey happy to announce that we are finally releasing it. Tony has been running the prototype setup on his car for about 2 months now, and has been rather happy with it.
So, finally, here is the TiC 5MT linkage update!!
This is for the pre-2006 Subaru 5MTs all the way back to 1998-ish for those cars that do not have the external centering spring on their tranny. 2002-2005 guys - I know it's going to be asked a lot - your car does not have the external spring. In other words, this will fit your car. We'll see how the interest is from the guys with external springs before we tackle that setup.
On to the meat of it -
Why do you need an entire linkage when the STi, 05+ Legacy, and 06+ everyone else can get away with just bushings?
Simple. The stock linkage on the 1998-ish to 2005 cars have a linkage that is not servicable. The front half is riveted together, and you can't replace those bushings. Sure you could grind off the rivet, but good luck finding a bolt that will work with those bushings, and that setup. It doesn't exist. Thus the update.
What about the bushings?
Our linkage update comes with TiC linkage bushings. They're stiffer, and more resistant to wear than the stock ones.
Why do I want this?
Well, if you like the feeling of stirring pudding while you shift then by all means keep your stock setup. For those of us that like to actually find the gear we want instead of guessing you're going to want this.
What does it look like?

How much is it?
We're not allowed to state prices in the announcement forum, but needless to say it, like all TiC parts, is priced so it makes sense.
Where can I get it?

Why do your pictures always suck?
Because Clint is by no means a photographer. He'd rather spend time on car stuff than on picture stuff.
Unabomber 04-03-2007, 07:44 PM 1. Where is my set?
2. What about the install? PITA, cake, 20 minutes + hand tools, 6 hours + Mk5 Shopsmith?

Follow the link. basic install instructions are on there. Not too bad, but after doing so many 6MT linkages anything 5MT is a luxury.
DVN428 04-03-2007, 11:15 PM ORDER PLACED! Can't wait to get them in the mail!
symby 04-04-2007, 10:04 AM Oooh.. you guys again... selling something I want.. :D
Amazake 04-04-2007, 04:49 PM So this makes the TiC 5MT Lever Pivot Bushings obsolete?
it shouldn't; this is the linkage bushings - a different piece entirely.
the pivot bushing goes in the shift lever.
Rasmusson14 04-04-2007, 05:22 PM Here are some pics comparing the two....notice the TiC one has a bolt where the OEM unit has a riveted joint making very difficult to replace that bushing.

pdippel 04-04-2007, 05:38 PM Since it goes back to 1998, I assume it will fit the MT5 STi short shifter? Which was basically the pre 2002 MT5 shifter.

yes. in fact, Kurt (rasmusson14) has a thread in the tranny forum with a pick of it on the short shifter.
Turn in Concepts 04-04-2007, 06:07 PM it shouldn't; this is the linkage bushings - a different piece entirely.
the pivot bushing goes in the shift lever.
Correct you are, sir.
Pivot bushing == goes in the lever where it pivots up top
Linkage and bushings == under the car, and allow for two way motion of the control rod to select the corect gear.
Basically, what this means is you can now upgrade ALL the bushings in the shifter assembly for the 1998-ish to 2005 Subaru 5MT's. Here's the list of all that you can do:
Kartboy front stay (we sell this)
Kartboy rear stay (we sell this)
TiC pivot bushings in narrow or wide (we make and sell this)
TiC Old 5MT linkage update (we sell this)
Heck, while you're at it you may as well add in a Kartboy lever. We sell those too. :)
crazymikie 04-05-2007, 12:24 PM I ordered one last night (and it shipped last night) :)
I can't wait to see how it feels. My shifter bushing collection will finally be complete.....
Thanks!
Mike
Tims Muffler 04-06-2007, 08:10 AM Cool stuff
Lachlan 04-08-2007, 02:03 AM so where's the little ring that the spring connects to, like on the stock one?
Daishi00 04-08-2007, 04:05 PM Woo Hoo!!!!
I'll be ordering mine next week :D
I love you guys even if Clint can't take a picture to save his life.
slvr02scooby 04-08-2007, 04:10 PM Installed this baby on Friday and it rules! Buy one now if you haven't already!
Turn in Concepts 04-08-2007, 04:40 PM so where's the little ring that the spring connects to, like on the stock one?
It isn't there. That's why this is for the linkages WITHOUT the external spring.

I see. reading comprehension pwns me.

we're going to wait and see on the one with the external spring, and make a call based upon demand.

anyway to characterize the difference?
Turn in Concepts 04-10-2007, 10:18 AM anyway to characterize the difference?
He may not see this so I'll cover it really quick.
Put your car in 3rd, and move the stick from side to side. See all that slop? This fixes it.
tonecold 04-10-2007, 04:27 PM How is this different from the pivot bushing?
The linkage bushings eliminates the side to side slop in 3rd,
so what does the pivot bushing help to eliminate?
slvr02scooby 04-10-2007, 09:09 PM anyway to characterize the difference?
Exactly how TIC has described it. Before I put it in my shifter felt very loose even in gear and could move it side to side, up and down would feel like it wanted to slide right out.
Now it's completely solid while in gear, it has almost no play at all in any direction. I also added Kartboy bushings with this at the same time so with these 3, it firmly goes in to gear and no longer moves while in it.
As for the install, it's very straight forward. While I did have access to a lift to do it, this would still be fairly easy with a jack and stands. Just pop out a pin, remove old linkage, put in TIC linkage, pop the pin back in!
You won't regret putting this, I'm still getting giggles everytime I go driving now
Lachlan 04-10-2007, 11:11 PM Here's a DIY I did to replace this part:
http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58760
I did it before TiC came out with theirs, so it's with the suby stock part, but TiC will do the same thing I'm sure if not better. Shows before and after videos of shifter too.

WRXBob 04-23-2007, 06:42 PM Do you know if this part will fit a 6 speed. I am doing a swap and that the parts I am missing.
Turn in Concepts 04-25-2007, 09:06 PM Do you know if this part will fit a 6 speed. I am doing a swap and that the parts I am missing.
No it will not. The 6MT uses a double offset on the linkage. You will need that one or things will be odd.
Although, we do make replacement bushings for the 6MT linkage.
sand_man 07-16-2007, 07:49 AM Hi, when do you think you will have these back in stock? Thanks.
